During the BCS ERA, SEC football teams have been to 104 bowl games. This equals an average of 8 teams per year going to bowl games. Even more impressive they have been to the big 5 (Sugar, Rose, Fiesta, Orange, and National Championship) 21 times, or on average they which is pretty good considering the first BCS National Championship game wasn't played until January of 2007). Their winning percentage is 76% in the major bowls.
This means they win 4 out of 5 games played in the big five bowl games. If that's not domination by the SEC football teams I don't know what is.
The main reason that SEC football is so dominant is because it is in the deep south which is the hotbed of college football. The people in these states are fanatical about their teams. The SEC Conference is bordered by the states Texas, Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. Along with California these states produce the top high school football players in the nation. Especially when it comes to speed.
That to me that is the biggest difference between the SEC and most other conferences - overall team speed. It becomes very apparent when a team from the SEC plays a team from the midwest or north. Not just the wide receivers and defensive backs but the defensive lines and linebackers from the teams in the SEC normally have great speed.
Maybe it's also because of the largest college football stadiums and fanatical fans, that the top players in the country want to play in the SEC. Nothing like playing in front of sold out crowds every week.
Most teams in the SEC East recruit Atlanta, Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville. In the SEC West they recruit Dallas, along with the entire states of Texas and Louisiana. Those cities and states just by pure numbers of high school athletes give the SEC a huge advantage. The ACC also pulls players from those cities and states but not near as many 4 and 5 star recruits as the SEC.
Another advantage for SEC football teams is their coaches. There are great coaches all over the country but a lot of your top coaches want to coach in the SEC because they know of the tremendous fan support for their team, the support the schools give the teams and the huge salaries coaches in the SEC get. Of course unbelievable pressure to win that comes from the fans and the school administration is part of the job.
Players want to get drafted high and the and the SEC leads in that category with the most players drafted in the first round of the draft and most total players drafted.
Overall SEC football prepares the top players for the NFL, the players get to play in front of huge fanatical crowds each week and they can look forward to almost every game of their college career being played on TV because of the SEC contracts with the national networks. This helps the SEC schools with recruiting because the players know their family will be able to watch them on TV if they are unable to attend the games.
