4 years trying to develope a powered stapler.....failed...oops we better go buy someone elses innovation. Purchase Power Medical and attempt to put our long line of innovative stapler knowledge on it and it will never launch. Let's fall back on our usual change the handle design plus add a row of staples and call it a triumph....what a joke. We havent come out with anything innovative in 30 years. Fire the whole design group.....no wait we just need 100 more engineers on the powered project and we'll be fine.... we should bring in the dozen or so PMI people that launched over 20 devices in 10 years and save millions.
 






It's not the design group. It's the division as a whole. They spend so long being a line-extention company focused more on cutting costs than innovation that it is very difficult for the mid-to-high level members of Sales, Marketing or R&D to do anything different. They've had some success in changing the culture there but there's still a long way to go.
 












Did you ever see the PMI device in action? Not sure that bringing those guys in would help...we were begging for an extra row of staples with all of the failures we were trying to explain. Let's face it, stapling is not a finesse process. The concept of variable compression based on tissue thickness is nice in theory, but it just isn't practical. Throw down 6 rows, cut, and finish with a little fibrin to stop any residual bleeding, call it a day. The powered stapler has some great features (articulation/one handed operation/motionless firing cycle,) and the right angled linear cutter is a home run, but it is all moot if the thing breaks every fourth firing or the staples don't form. Or worse, if the circular stapler jams and breaks/freezes while it is closed on a low anastomosis...Make it sturdy, and reliable, and you have the state of the art. Maybe easier said than done though.
 






But watch, we'll over-engineer this thing and then jack up the price to make it so hard to sell. It'll turn into another typical Covidien fiasco and once again put us out of touch with the market place.
 












Duet looks cool, but not all surgeons are believers in butressing...I am sure you are aware of the literature against it's use. I think it is a nice advancement, though, and when I was selling staples, I couldn't understand why there wasn't a load/device with the butress already applied. It is a nice advancement.

I am just not sure that it is the silver bullet to prevent bleeding/dehiscence. It does mean that the staple has to pass through, and form around more/thicker tissue. Are you seeing more misfires/malformed staples? How does it work in very thick tissue (eg: bariatric surgery?) Not saying it isn't the solution, I just don't know.

Has Covidien continued to develop a stapler for the DaVinci per the PMI licensing agreement?

It's been 11 months!!!!! we've already over-engineered it and over qualitied it and over supply chained it.
We have just reached the knowledge point that PMI had in 2006 and only 3 years to go!!!!
the really dumb move was letting the knowledge base go and moving it to N Haven because were so superior to some small company with not enough resources. With 10% of the budget that we've already pissed away on this PMI could have fixed every issue in half the time thats been spent already....we could have done what we do best.....non value added activities.....then move it if you want to. We have remotley based PMI ASS kissers still on the payroll the ones that bullshitted and took credit for any successes at PMI. Exactly the ones we shouldnt have kept....... anyone that could accomplish anythig we felt threatened by and let go..........Arrogance will come back and bite you every time.

Yea..it's pretty cool but not $500 a reload cool!!! Once again a novel product that could have fit well in a niche (buttressing) market so overpriced that even surgeons interested are blocked because the clinical value isn't great enough to justify $400 additional dollars a reload. Pricing strategies SUCK for competitive territories!!! But ohh!!! we have our quarterly priorities we have to meet! What a joke. No wonder so many people are jumping ship.
 










































Covidien has no clue how to compete in this market and environment.

Total arrogance from leadership about 2 years ago when the economy changed drastically.

Covidien's products are not that great (not nearly as great as the misguided leadership team thinks they are).

Hospitals WILL NOT pay more money for innovation. The products are not that much better than what ethicon and the competition has at a much better price point.

Surgeons WILL NOT continue to push for new product approvals, they will not have the power in the near future.

Wake up you jerks! This a new ERA, it's call Obama Care.

Adjust pricing, get on some big contracts or watch the stock drop to

$15 per share in the next 9 months you idiots.

If you think the last year has been bad, just wait 12 more months and keep sitting on your delusional butts.
