Drop any thoughts of a legal challenge to this downsizing. If you think the company hired guns haven’t been consulted on every possible scenario for this becoming a legal issue, you’re mistaken. The situation sucks but it is what it is. Take control of your future as you thought you were when you came on board with Genentech. All companies have issues

Not a troll at all. I've been here quite a long time myself. The point is........You do not have any legal recourse, because they are making cuts. This is not age, race, sexual discrimination. It's a Re-Org, plain and simple. If you choose to believe that if you get cut, you will be joining a "class action suit" then you are either naive or dumb. Focus your energy on Career Labs, what jobs are open in your geography and making sure you have the support of your manager.

As someone who has worked in the industry for over 20 years and I have also lived with MS for 18 years let me fill you in on some things. MS specialists don’t need reps for info but they do need all the patient support that drug companies provide, helping patients and their offices navigate insurance and sites of care. As for MDs that are not MS specialists they are clueless. I’ve seen many, and have been forced to travel 5 hours to see a good neurologist. This is where sales reps can thrive helping lazy physicians get educated on new products. This helps patients have better access to care so they don’t have to travel hours and hours to see a good doctor.

Sorry not a drug rep, I said I worked in the industry for 20+ years. I also said I was a patient, who has sat across from specialists, neurologists, that I knew 10 times more about MS than they do. I have had my neurologist pass me off to a medical assistant (just to let you know that is a 2 year degree at a community college) to do my assessment and they knew next to nothing about MS. I have had physicians just want to switch me from one drug to another, that are in the same class, while better medications were available. When I finally saw an MS specialist they were disgusted with what the physicians I was seeing were recommending, and I was seeing board certified neurologists. More cuts does not equal more profits. I do agree that sales forces need to be sized appropriately, and that Genentech hired too many people for this product.

By the way I know 10 times the doctors that you do, and most want good reps, just not too many of them.

So I hear this is going to affect 16 people? My wife is a lawyer and says they will have a big problem on their hands if they don’t find employment for these people. This is not a massive sales reduction due to the need to cut costs. The facts are not in their favor as these employees were part of a highly successful 1 billion $ launch. The salesforce was showing strong success and there would not be a need to cut jobs. There would have to be a legitimate reason why that person is being let go versus their nearby counterparts. If they have stronger sales numbers than those being kept, could also be a red flag for an attorney. Even more scrutinized is that it is a relatively low number or employees with the number being 16 versus cutting half the sales force. Are the employees a minority such as African American, Gay, Over 50? All will be legitimate cause for a lawsuit. GNE will have legal liability when they don't have documentation to backup their layoff decisions. My wife says GNE will have to publicly announce the selection criteria and be prepared to legally explain why one employee was chosen over the other. Selection criteria will need to be revealed and they will be forced to do so. My friends in the MS franchise told me time and time again that they were told transformation would be an exciting time where opportunities (ie jobs) would be created. If GNE is prepared to adversely affect someone’s current position, they better have an alternative plan on where to place these people.

Face it folks, this is the new Genentech and it isn’t our big brother’s Genentech. We will be micro managed by DM’s and RSDs who will be calling to ride with you more than once a quarter, try every 3-4 weeks minimum. Big pharma has permeated all corners of this outfit and there is no turning back. Be prepared for your manager to demand loyalty to the company and your brand - which means you’ll be asking for all appropriate patients in each call - you will need to actually sell.
