I know, I know...very blah. But how have everyone's fortune's changed since October 2007?

Me:42 year old male, 2 kids
$730,000 which includes $580K investible assets and $150K house equity. Down 15% from 2007 but coming back somewhat. I am behind but trying my best. Worried about college costs

Anyone else?

Oh, and after the real estate and stock market crash I suppose you're going to tell us that your net worth rose 20% in the last year too, right? Let me guess. You went to cash when the DOW hit 14000 and then loaded up the truck when it fell to 6000, right? And the value of your home appreciated because you discovered oil under your property, right? Fill us in, woncha?

It's weird b/c pharma has the biggest bunch of naysayers in the world. Can't believe that someone would make more than 100k a year, or have the smarts to invest wisely.. Fuck off. There are plenty of people that have profited very well in this recession. Just b/c you haven't don't hate or disbelive. You are a pharma rep. Working a job. For someone else. Making barely more or barely less than a 100k a year. GET OVER YOURSELF DOUCHEBAG!

The other poster is right. Why should anyone believe you and your net worth claims? Don't even bother with your wild ass claims unless you're willing to post your last brokerage statement and give us the address of the property in question so we can review it's history on Zillow. Otherwise your on-line claims are worthless.

High end neighborhood in FL, house paid off in March '10. 3 kids college prepaid. before and after tax accounts rebounding. current net worth around 1.4 - when market rebounds around 1.8. i have taken pharma for all i could - 14 yrs in bus this March - may just retire and become the trophy wife i already am.

Never read so much bullshit in all my life. the trophy wife probably looks like somebody beat her with the ugly stick. Why don't we ever get guys who have a house in foreclosure who can't shake the bill collectors responding to the net worth threads? It's always some asshole who claims to be a millionaire at 35. All unadulterated horse shit. Don't post your net worth unless you are able to document your claims.....home address and last brokerage statement. Otherwise, fuck off.

114.6 Now that is some funny shit right there. Do you weigh yourself at the meat market?

no I don't dumbass....obviously you are like the rest of America - getting fatter every day because that is something you don't manage and ignore....Very accurate digital scales are now available at WalMart, Kohls, etc that will weight you in .2 increments plus a body fat %. Check it out and clue in so you don't roll out of bed one day and wonder how your suit pants got so tight and where did the extra 20 pounds come from...oh ya...I'm also over 40 with 3 kids...

How about some numbers people? Ok, mine aren't too pretty-I'll admit. I was a fool and never saved much. But my wife and I have been trying hard over the last 3 or 4 years. We have neglected our son's college savings plan but now are trying to put $300/month in.

Age 38
401K $168K
Savings $35K
529K $3,500
House equity...not much. We live in South Florida and there are foreclosures everywhere. I would say we have maybe $35K in equity max. The value of our home is down 35% plus

Is your 401-k fully invested or are you in cash?

Thanks for being honest.

Few on this board are.

Everybody tries to impress the other guy and everyone is anonymous.

Fucking bizarre.

Why do people imply this is not good? it's more than I have and people tell me I live too cheaply preparing for the future.

I don't know why everyone jumped all over you as dishonest. I'll assume you are telling the truth but if you are I don't know when you are worried about paying for college.

My boss is a DM getting ready to retire. He is a multi-millionaire. Started investing early and bought real estate all the way. I fully expect to be a millionaire when I retire- it only takes good solid consistent investing. Most important, investing early when you're young is the key.

32 Yrs Old Wife is 30

$98,000 in 401Ks
$20,000 in Cash/CDs
House Equity $65K

I only got into the pharma gig 3 years ago. Now I wonder if I will lose this job within a year. Was in human services prior and making peanuts. But I did have job security. Just couldn't save anything because I didn't make anything then. Wife is still in human services. We wonder if we will ever be able to retire.

From Chartman:
This thread is hilarious!

Age: late 40's
Zero in 401(k) [rolled over to IRA when layoff arrived]
140k in IRA (Sits in bank MMF, cashing out ASAP, though)
320k in T-bills since years ago (so lost nothing in Wall Street debacle)
26k at brokerage account (banked 7k last year on QID, a 2x inverse short of Nasdaq 100)
Paid off house six or seven years ago.

Net Worth ~650k (On paper. Who cares what the house is worth, I gotta' live somewhere. The only thing that matters is cash. Everything else is only worth what it'll sell for when I want to sell it.)
Debt: zero
Kids' college costs: 1/2 already covered by scholarships, other half no problem.

Nobody has all the answers (I sure don't). One observation, however: 10-day average daily volume for SPY (the exchange traded fund that tracks the S&P500 index) has been collapsing for 7 months, the entire stock rally. Measures of price rate-of-change are diverging (lower and lower peaks) with each new stock rally. This is all classic bear market rally behavior, indicating that odds favor the next major move in stocks to be DOWN.

The best historical analogy to these times is the immediate aftermath of England's South Sea Bubble. What followed was a 64 year bear market on the London Stock Exchange, and prices didn't exceed the peak of the bubble for 100 years.

If this is remotely what our future holds, just keeping what we have will be a major challenge. People have never been so well set up to take a crushing fall as they are now.
