Sales reps will always exist. Relationship selling will always exist.
What you say has merit. Relationships in selling is key. No one will argue with this. However when 50% or more of doctors don't let you into the office it's hard to create a relationship. Also, from what I observed it's a 20 second message not a selling call that happens in the majority of calls that actually occur. Again, not much relationship building is there. Also keep in mind some reps will talk to a doctor for 15 minutes about Sunday's NFL game. They may spend 10 seconds on the AZ product. This is NOT relationship selling by any stretch of the imagination. Do I think Pharma sales will exist. The answer is yes but not in the configuration we see now with mega sales forces and multiple reps calling on the doctor for the same drug. It just doesn't make any business sense at all. How will this reduction happen? Perhaps by attrition and if that doesn't do it.....layoffs will happen. Those of us prepared for this dismal future will be fine. Those reps that keep on stating that layoffs won't occur and the model won't change in my humble opinion are wrong. Keep in mind the most popular and longest lasting thread on CP for AZ is "The all day lie" that has to tell you something.
