DUI mistake and my choices

Hey everyone,

I’m in a tough spot and could use some advice. Recently, I got a DUI on my way back from a date. It was a stupid mistake, and it’s something I deeply regret. I don’t drink much, and I’ve made the decision not to drink at all going forward.

I’ve just had my first court date, and it didn’t go well. My lawyer and I are weighing two main options, and I’m torn between them:
  1. Accepting the DUI: This would mean a permanent (no expungement in my state) misdemeanor record. It’s a heavy burden to carry, knowing that it could impact various aspects of my life forever.
  2. Pleading to a Felony: This would involve pleading to a different charge (some form of aggregated offense), which can be expunged in two years with probation. On the surface, this would make my life terrible for two years but then back to "normal". This seems like a better option because it offers a clear path to getting a fresh start sooner, but I’m obviously comes with some risks.
A bit about me for context: I’ve just finished my MBA and currently work at a small startup. With about seven years of pharma experience, I’m considering going back into a pharmaceutical sales role or potentially moving into a sales management position now that I have management experience.

I’m obviously not sharing this with many people I know personally due to the embarrassment and shame I’m feeling. I’d really appreciate any insights or advice from anyone.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Probably would do #2 and work on the expungement. Fine and probation seem to be sufficient.. does it make sense to take a way a man's living for 1st offense, seems too heavy-handed. Would a different attorney be able to help?

Yea, it feels awful all my work in my life is going to be thrown away for one mistake but that's the law. I called around and they all say similar things. Also getting a new attorney after the 1st round of "negotiations" is frowned upon.

Any updates? I am in a similar situation and looking for any advice.
