Dark cloud hanging over Merck Frosst or Kenilworth

I am not sure if they are key people. They may be key to Kathleen Metters but they mean noboy to me. They should be relocated to sales because they are so good at selling their crapy PCCs to Peter Kim and Dick Clark.

The remaining "leadership" is weak and is scared to death of Kathleen. Look for more concentration of like minded individuals (oxymoron intended) in the US, particularly Boston.
Frosst will become a contract lab for the new Merck being led by those without the backbone to stand up to the queen.

Reno stopped at MF, shift of infectious to SP is in the works

If true, they are going to need to bring all, or many of the scientists down to NJ, because my understanding is that they only work on HCV, and in a limited fashion in basic. They can't have the capacity to keep HIV, HCV and Antibacterial&antifungal in play??? Please clarify any SP people that know the size of the ID franchise in basic at SP....

No kidding. I feel bad for the scientists at Merck Frosst. Having said that, they didnt have any expertise there on either HIV or HCV.

A period of disruption and low productivity

To merge, to survive
but merger only keeps it alive
gone are the two vibrant companies that strive
disappeared are the scientists that used to give each other high five

Merck is on its path to decline
Just like every other company whose fate is also on the line
The days with big profits are no longer fine
The future is bleak, yours and mine

This has been the rumor for quite a while. I'd be suprised if MF remained a "New Merck" site in the future.

I will bet 5 bucks for its remaining. They have a very strong record despite of years mismanagement by Kathleen Metters and her likes. Wouldnt have Vioxx (i know it is a black mark but only inflicted by Peter Kim), Singulair and the CatK inhibitor without MF. All the site needs now is to remove all the "managers" and install some strong scientific leaders.

Very little infectious disease work in Kenilworth now. In the past, a substantial effort but 'new management' gutted it, pretty much gone by 2004. Company would look at in-licensing but nothing to talk of for in-house developed.

Some work on anti-viral but again, essentially nothing on anti-bacterials.

So.....does it really make any sense to gut Merck Frosst then if there are no personnel at SP to take ID over? If Merck wants any kind of presence in ID in basic research, then the quickest leanest solution seems to leave it at MF, right or wrong. Who knows.

The problem is the Merck Frosst has zero expertise in virology!

Compared to who? The 10 people in NJ that do? It's drug discovery stupid - you need a few figure heads who set up the collaborations and guide the ship. ID is by far the easiest franchise to do drug discovery in - bar none. They can discover small molecules to targets better than anyone. Period.

If it was that easy, everyone would be doing it and the marketed products would be commodities, stupid.
