They would never announce that layoffs are coming on a Friday.
They would announce the actual layoffs on a Friday, but they're not announcing a "stay home and wait" heading into a weekend.

I have been here since the early 90’s. In 1998 we woke up one Friday morning with an email stating that our managers would call us that day with a personal impact statement for a company restructuring. By the end of the day over 200 people in our division were let go. This was pre WARN period but don’t for a minute think that they won’t do this on a Friday. Friday is the best day for them to make these announcements.
