Current Merial reps- would you join the company again if given the chance?

I am already in the industry with a competitor and I am being recruitted to come to Merial- if you were me, would you look at Merial?

Yes
I have been with Merial for over 14 years in sales territory.
Merial pays higher than the competition and the growth opportunities with Merial are abundant.
Ask yourself how your salary, benefits, and growth potential are where you are at now and compare those to Merial
Then decide.

I say yes, too. I have been in a territory for 7 years. Are things perfect - no, but where are they perfect. Our salary, comp plan, and benefits are very good. Unless you work at Lilly or maybe BI I would give us a strong consideration.

Are you saying that if you work at Lilly or BI...Merial doesn't want you? Or if you work at Lilly or BI...then you're better off there vs. Merial?

Yes, East Coast rep here
Merial is the Cadillac of the industry for its employees.
If you are in the Veterinary sales industry and have a job offer from Merial.
I would suggest making the move to Merial.
Others are only lower paying jobs.
This is a career.

I can not say I would join this group again - management leaves a bit to be desired - there are aspects of certain sections of the business they will never understand

I was saying if you work for or get an offer from Lilly (ELANCO), or BI stay there or take the offer. Those are the only two companies I feel would be more appealing then Merial. Good Luck!

What makes these companies so appealing? I am new to animal health and just joined Bayer and it seems to be a decent company with a decent package. The management is a bit "over the top" in micromanaging, but I thought that I had heard the same thing about Merial. Please enlighten me as I hope I did not make a mistake!!

Merial pays more.
Our management does not micro-manage salespeople. We are profesionals and people will retire after long progressive careers here.
Can you say the same about your company?

I wish I knew! What I do know, is that my starting salary was $75,000 with bonus/commissions around $25,000-30,000 plus a car with NO GPS (however, my manager is pretty much a GPS system in and of himself!). What's Merial compensation like?
I know a few people with Bayer that just retired after 25-30 years, but like I said, I'm new to the company. I will say though, that Merial territories seem a bit more attractive (smaller) and easier to manage. I wish I would have applied to the position that was also open in my area.

I am also with Bayer and wish I worked for Merial. They make more money than we do and I agree that they have smaller territories.
What are of the country is this opening in? I am willing to relocate.

I'm looking for some advice- I have worked in big pharma for the past 12 years and would like to make the move to animal/vet sales. Can anybody please give me some advice as to how to make the change? What are the companies looking for? Is my background a good fit? Thank you.

They do not look for anything specific outside of overall sales experience and abilities. Reps have been hired from every field. It depends more on the hiring manager and the chemistry that you have with them.
But be warned. The Vet industry is becoming more like the Human Industry. It is micromanaged and the stress of sales is daily, not quarterly. Due to the mergers, just like the human companies, jobs are not secure now.

Amen to this- I worked Animal Helath in the 90's, left for human pharma and came back to Animal Helath recently- I remember what it was like back then- make your sales dollar number at the end of the year and that was it- now its all about your 'activities'- how many lunches, etc and account tiering and targeting and micromanaging daily call plans and etc instead of just selling product where you can- rather discouraging- but its a job- human pharma is in such a state of contraction and with all the stuff going on with law suits over Rx data mining and so forth the only sane place to work where you can actually access and talk to customers and feel like you are accomplishing something is Animal Health

I am a recent college grad and have been working at a vet. clinic but trying to do anything to get my foot in the door with animal health sales. I need any additional advice or help of any kind of how I could have a chance. I have a person in upper management at merial trying to get me into the inside sales training position; wish me luck.

I have been in human pharma for 22 years and it is time for me to make a change. Just curious if you guys could tell me what kind of money I could expect to make in sales or sales management. Thank you!
