Company car vs car allowance

Ok before everyone starts lambasting me for asking this question, HR is requiring MS candidates to complete all HR forms, including election of car allowance or company car, and to bring the completed forms to the panel interviews. I'm wondering if someone can state the pros/cons of car allowance vs company car so I can try to make an informed choice without having to ask this awkward question during the interview process. Thanks for serious replies.

I think it depends on the size of your territory. The gas allowance per mile is pretty generous so that might off set costs. But I think generally from a financial perspective you are always better off with company car. I think allowance is if you have a strong preference for your personal vehicle. Good luck!

Y'all it all depends...

I for one prefer the company cars but our fleet choices are dwindling. Enjoyed the Audi A3 TDI, A4 and surprisingly good Volvo S60. Many peeps prefer Subaru Outback, Ford Explorer and Jeep Cherokee Limited. Most cars come fully loaded often with nav and prepaid service. Wheels is easy to work with. Audi/VW got kicked out due to dieselgate and replaced by POS Mercedes GLA.

Happy Passover and L'Chaim!

Fleet choices dwindling???might that be the presence of Papa Roach? Genentech reps are in for a rude awakening.

I don't know what each level is? Rep and manager perhaps?
Level 1:

Ford Fusion Hybrid 2016

Toyota Prius 2016

Toyota Camry Hybrid 2016

Level 2:

Audi A4 2017

Volvo S60 2016

Chevrolet Equinox 2016

For those of you coming on board, who is taking the car allowance? Trying to do my homework on cars but I am a little overwhelmed! Any recommendations on nice cars that would qualify for the higher allowance?

Everyone is in a different situation. I am going for the safety net which is the free fleet ride. Taking an allowance may leave you with an unwanted and unpaid car if things go south. The drug is not approved and we do not know how it will be received in each territory. Less worry if you have the fleet mobile in your driveway. If all goes well I may take the allowance during the next order cycle which is probably 2-3 years. There might be exceptions such as if you tow a boat or have a Brady bunch sized family.

Im in the same boat. Trying to figure out the car situation. I wanted to go with a fleet vehicle but the selections are so poor. Surprised to see that from such an amazing company. Trying to figure out how to make the allowance option work. Almost impossible to find a good vehicle that qualifies for the higher reimbursement.

when will you people wake up and realize that Genentech may operate under it's old name, but it is now run like roche. You are a big pharma monkey now with a "Genentech" business card. Are you ready for the big pharma metrics? Have fun!

My .02? If you are new to the company. Take the company car. Unless you have the grandfathered car allowance (how much longer I don't know) you will lose money. Roche/Genentech whatever. The fact is that the company would save a tremendous amount of money by putting everyone in company cars. They might mandate it some day. Who cares. If this is what keeps you up at night, then you need to prioritize.
