CEREC specialist

Since I now work for a competitor and this what I'm being told by old Patterson clients then I guess I'm wrong. Thanks for correcting me.
You are being told by old "cheap" Patterson clients who we probably don't want to do business with. Good luck with those types. They want the best quality and the lowest price. ADEC for less than DentalEZ, Schick for less than MyRay, Sirona for less than some brand they found online, 3M matched to some gray market dealer fax.

You are welcome for correcting you.

Thank you so much! You sound like the most amazing rep of all time! So much knowledge!

Speaking from experience here. There are about 80 cerec specialists in the US. Almost one third of them have left the position over the last 10-12 months. The compensation plan is the problem. You get $67k a year draw. When you hit $1,400,000 in sales you start getting commisipn. The problem is you never hot $1,400,000 in sales. And by the way no expenses - no mileage no car allowance, no tolls no parking nothing. So that measley $67k draw soon becomes a lot less. This, In a nutshell, is the position. If you're happy making $67,000 and paying your owns expenses it's a pretty good gig.

The product is great company is good but this year has been terrible for CEREC SALES. Down 60% over last year. Most cerec specialists aren't making enough money to justify the commitment to stay with the company. Some areas 50% of positions are unfilled. Cerec people are usually at the top of their game and are in high demand by competitors and other medical, company. With the job market in high gear now more cerec people will be moving on.
All it,would take is a comp. plan change that reflected the new reality of the cerec market and people would stay. But Patterson is watching as dozens of cerec people leave. This will have serious ramifications when the Sirona CEREC exclusive comes up for renewal in a year and a half.

60% down? That's a huge decline! Any specific reason for the large drop?

No one seems to know why sales have hit the brakes, not even in corp. Everyone just sits around waiting for that big wave of sales to come, but it doesnt. In the meantime, most of the talented CEREC people have saying, "it was great while it lasted" and leaving for medical, management or other higher paying, expense reimbursed positions where their talent is appreciated.
CEREC got by on the fact that they were the only player in the market, In my opinion that creates a company that is not competitive. Patterson doesn't know what its like to compete in a fiercely competitive segment like CAD/CAM. When aggressive, nimble companies come into the segment, the incumbent usually gets slaughtered. My opinion is this is what is happening. Patterson holds onto this "no discount, no deal, no price reductions, while the competitors are the opposite. Add to this a huge defection of talent - almost 50% of current CEREC positions in the US are open, and you see the beginning of the down slide of this companys once dominant position.

Wow, this is awful. What is the company doing to fix it ?

They are doing nothing. About 50% of the cerec specialists have left. Sirona's contract with Patterson is up shortly and one would think that Patterson would be scrambling to keep their cerec marketing and sales in shape so they'd have a shot at keeping their, exclusive contract its Sirona's to sell Cerec. My feeling is that once 2017 comes cerec will become non exclusive and be sold by other distributors as well as Patterson.

"If you're happy making $67,000 and paying your owns expenses it's a pretty good gig."

In other words, if the statement above is correct, and I have No Reason to doubt that it is, then this job is one of, if not the, Worst Paying positions in the dental arena.

Stop wondering why sales are cratering while talent runs for the hills and re-read the sentence in between the quotes above as many times as it takes to form your own cogent, succinct answwer. 3 words should do it (hint: This job stinks).

It's OK to mouth the words or speak out loud if you get confused or have trouble, after all, it is the dental business.

Dentistry - Funny Business.

The cerec specialist position is a wonderful position - if you don't care about making a lot of money. You will be busy and you will learn quite a bit, you just won't make a whole heck of a lot of dough.

Wonderful ?

You're an idi o t - Perfect for dental.

Cerec Specialists seem to be abandoning ship en masse. The poor bastards that are left either believe the horrendous sales will somehow magically change overnight, or that the comp plan will be changed by Minnesota. The real issue is that everyone that is left will have nothing to sell come 2017. Exclusivevity going away as it did with A Dec. $70 million haircut in 2017.
I'm sure the CS 's that are left wll be offered TR positions.
