If youre going to retire at 60 you better get more aggressive in putting money away or you will need to prepare to live a very meager lifestyle and have little to no care in your final years.

My husband and I are both 50. We just paid off our 450K house this past month. We have 40K in emergency fund (liquid cash), no debt at all, and 621K in our combined 401ks. Husband will retire in a couple of years with a government pension worth 80K a year. One adult child. The plan is continue to max out 401K and stack cash in bank and retire at 55. No touching the 401K until it doubles to 1.2 million if ever (around 7 years or so.)

not sure how things are going here.....

54 here wife is same age. we have about 3.4 million dollars saved and no kids ( but a couple furry ones). So over it here and I need to get insurance from her if I retire early or she does vice versa. How much does one need to retire? We have a country house and a city house in the NE and still hefty mortgages but a fair amount of equity. And no we are not selling city place until we retire. We will retire in the country. We put away about 60,000 each of us per year in retirement and income accounts.
