Shoot for smaller, privately held companies with sales leaders who haven’t been let go from their last 6 sales leadership roles due to poor treatment of their reps. Check out Glassdoor for accurate leadership reviews, as they can not be deleted (allegedly) from the website like they can on here. Look for a new/novel technology/product. If a product has been around for awhile (PGX testing, tumor profiling, hereditary cancer genetics, etc have all run their courses when it comes to big bonus checks and possible equity cash). For example, companies like Myriad launched their BRCA testing and their reps crushed it for awhile, until they lost their patent and multiple competitors diluted the market share, insurance eventually stoped paying, and within 8-10 years those $60-$80k quarterly bonuses dried up and will never come back again. A tale as old as time in med sales, but that’s the game we all play. Not to say those kinds of companies aren’t a stable $130-160k base with varying degrees of commission, but if you want to make real money you have to take chances on product launches and equity. Make sure you get in on the ground floor with something like oncology or rare disease/orphan drug opportunity, get your equity in writing, key word being non-diluteable shares. Browsing the negativity on CF will make you want to run from anywhere but take it with a grain of salt. If a company already has 80 pages of disgruntled employee complaints for 10 years, red flag. And, never ever ever stop job searching, even when you’re happy where you’re at, always keep a wandering eye for new opportunities or else you will get stagnant and miserable.
