Bad Manager

Can anyone let me know if there is any help at Genentech/Roche with Bad Managers? or is it all talk.

You won't get help from HR. A few years ago there were a couple of really bad female managers in the southeast region, and even the regional manager was involved in unethical and illegal practices. There were repeated complaints to HR from the reps in the divisions. It went as far as to have roundtable "360" meetings with the divisions and some flunky consultant HR hired to come in and smooth things over. The managers were allowed to stay in the room while the reps were directly asked what the managers were doing wrong. It was quickly clear that HR wasn't really trying to solve the problem, just to check the boxes saying they had an intervention meeting and all is now good. Nothing came from it at all. No accountability, no consequences for the bad managers. There wasn't even a follow up survey later from the reps to see if anything had changed. The regional manager was eventually downsized at the first opportunity. Now he's a self-proclaimed "consultant" on management after forming his own company because no one would hire him.

Your best approach is to document an action the bad manager is doing and go outside the company for legal help. There are whistleblower legal firms that specialize in handling cases like that. Make sure your guns are loaded before going into the gunfight, though.

Thank you for you feedback. It is a shame when a company is voted the best company to work for and they have this BS going on.

If you have any legal contacts let me know.

I know of 2 reps who reported their manager for mandating off label discussions. Both were highly ranked and were soon severed due to cut backs. Needless to say, others who were less successful were kept.

The old days of doing what is right are OVER. Now it is protect management at all costs. Ask the folks in managed care

The company really needs to sort out some managers. The new managers come from other companies and they bring their bad habits. This is not what made Genentech Successful or will in the future.

What is the point of surveys if they are not going to address these bad manager. Some of the manager do not want to share information they think job security. They need to get a clue.

I think the company instead of laying off people they are forcing people out of commercial. Why do not do the right thing lay people off rather than screwing with them and they know who they are. May the company needs a few more lawsuits.

Agree that there is a problem with the management layer, but don't buy your premise that its because they come from other companies. They have always come from other companies! And there have been bozos since I can remember.

The problem now is that because we are so big and there are so many managers, it's easy to hide. Also, higher management is now more than ever managing their careers that they refuse to get their hands dirty by addressing problems.

Salvatore Bevivino, 52, a business manager for Genentech, boarded a Virgin America flight on April 28, 2012. After the plane reached cruising altitude over Indiana, the former Amblerite pushed the call button and asked for a soda.

According to the suit, a male attendant told Bevivino that if he wanted a drink he would have to use a computer touch screen installed on the back of the facing seat.

When another attendant passed a minute later, Bevivino made the request for a second time and asked why they couldn't deliver a drink like other airlines. After Bevivino said he would contact Virgin America, a third attendant brought him the soda.

The aircraft landed at San Francisco International. But as Bevivino began to disembark he was pulled aside by the plane's captain "as a person of suspicion."

Bevivino said he had no idea why he was detained. Initially he believed that his swarthy Italian complexion may have caused him to be mistaken for someone from the Middle East.

Then the pilot asked him why'd he'd been yelling obscenities at his crew.

And added that he'd left the toilet unflushed.

The pilot then asked a half-dozen uniformed police, FBI and TSA agents to remove Bevivino.

According to a police incident report, a flight attendant told an investigator that Bevivino had gone to the restroom after asking for the drink:

"[He] came back out with a smile on his face and began using profanities. [Name redacted] passed by the restroom and saw that Bevivino left the door open and did not flush the toilet."

The police report notes the captain didn't believe he or his flight crew ever felt threatened by Bevivino.

Bevivino, who now lives in the Bay Area, told police he had not yelled obscenities at anyone or left any toilet unflushed. He only had been trying to order a drink, was flustered with problems with the onboard computer, and had become frustrated when the flight attendant ignored him, according to the police report.

Bevivino was eventually released, but only after the incident had caused him embarrassment, humiliation, mortification, mental anguish and emotional distress, and damage to his professional reputation, according to the suit.

The complaint states that Virgin America violated Bevivino's civil rights through false imprisonment, discrimination, and denial of equal rights.

Nope. YOU WILL GET MANAGED OUT. Period. ERC and HR are a joke. They will either not call you back or not listen to a word you say. If anyone knows of a legal contact, let us know!

this is the truest thing ever writtten. Even when managers lie, are non-compliant, harassing, rude, ER and HR do nothing. The management is the worst.

SE Avastin management is the worst. Not sure what JJ does to them but they can't make their own decisions or even think for themselves. If you have an idea, you better keep it to yourself or you'll be labeled as negative, even if you are trying to help.

Senior leadership with hepatitis (or what is left of hep). Didn't push for "competition with preference" any harder than they had to for the reps since it's more important that they keep them hanging on as head count then truly support them looking for other positions. There isn't a freakin "dream job" within this company and I hope there isn't one for GP, AD or TP.
