Another lawyer running the business "priceless"

I am guessing you are a lawyer also...and you are wrong, many of the sales reps do have science degrees...and I was not suggesting a former sales rep run the business, just maybe someone who actually had a little manufacturing experience, had actually stepped foot on a manufacturing floor...many decisions are in grey areas, reallyy kinda helps to have some practical knowledge to make an informed decision...

So true, we tried this before with Kindler..it was a disaster! A career lawyer with no practical industry experience in charge of major areas of our business, just because she wanted the experience...yet another example of why Pfizer struggles for success

I'm going to work for a startup as their sales director. Decent money and an ownership stake. And it looks like I should have my pick of the litter from Pfizer, Lilly, AZ, et al... I'm just looking to work another 8-10 years, then move to my beach house in Belize full-time.

Nice knowing everyone.

You truly are my hero. I hope I know you so you can pull me away.

Good luck.

I agree, just what we needed, another career lawyer in a position they have no background for

Come on now, her career with a law firm and as head lawyer at Pfizer doesnt qualify her to run a pharma business? Next thing you will be telling me is that being head lawyer for a fast food company does not qualify you to be CEO of the largest pharma company in the industry...

he was not qualified.

She is not Kindler. Business as usual sales/marketing has produced big fines. What special knowledge does she lack? Bet 95%+ of sales reps. have never formulated a drug yet they sell the stuff. Same reps. never took chemistry or pharmacology. Statistics, math or any other science function important to this company. Perhaps, to think outside the box, you have to be born outside the box.

She needs to be given a chance. Frankly, we will find out soon. If she bases her early decisions on feedback from the current idiots (with few exceptions) running her future businesses, we will know we are in trouble. If she goes down the organization and talks to those who do the real work, we will be in great shape. While I have never met her, she has done some pretty amazing things suggesting that she has the intelligence and ability to transform oncology and vaccines. We will see if the usual suspects bring her (so far stellar) career to a halt.

Thanks for checking in Amy. What pretty amazing things has she done at Pfizer, since I have not heard of them. Please inform us all who have yet to hear about these things. I will promise to sing happy birthday to you on a global conference call to employees like we did a couple of years ago. If you screw things up, that's ok if thousands of us lose our jobs, because your a lawyer and you must be awesome.

There was no "we" when it came to Jeff Kindler. Bill Steere picked him out over much better candidates and put him in the corner office. Jeff was the replacement for a previous Bill Steere pick, who was another disaster. We can't complain, though. This was a classic example of the free enterprise system that we all adore......

The PP has no idea what amazing things she has done, mainly because there are none. I have nothing against her personally, just take issue lawyers being put in charge of a business for which they have no background...

Perhaps, to think outside the box, you have to BE the box. If you can BE the box, then you would not have to be born outside of the box. For all you highly intelligent idiots at Pfizer, the sales/marketing fines were stamped and approved by the ELT. Nothing was done without the knowledge and therefore, permission of the higher ups in the company. Your lack of knowledge won't fool anyone who can actually THINK outside the box. Bet 95% of the folks who formulate the drugs never sell the drugs. What is your point. That's right, you have no point. FYI, to get a college degree, you may want to refresh your memory that is requires taking chemistry, statistics, and math. Does the PP actually think someone has to have a degree in chemistry to understand a clinical paper of a drug. The PP must have been born INSIDE the box, with it taped up and never let out to have a clue about life. Just saaaying.

Nicely said. Education and experience go to the credentials of the individual. I doubt Pfizer training can produce a 14-day wonder who can fool a prescribing doctor. Operations personnel are involved in rolling out a new product because they have to produce it. Packaging is a major part of selling and can be a difficult production issue. The point was to parry and defend somebody being trashed on the internet. Yes, a science background is necessary to understand a clinical paper if you wish to engage a physician. Proficiency is also required. Those who wish to teach must be able to "do" if I may twist a phrase. More than one person is replying on this thread.

Exactly, and to have credibility as a leader you have to understand the business that you are leading...very difficult to do that if you have never actually WORKED in the business and only know what you have read and been told by others...

Well, how does a leader get that first big leadership job? No matter what that next job is, be it new company, position, or new team, they will have to make one significant leap up/over. Two simulataneous leaps would be too much. The Board has to believe in them that they can quickly adapt. Try to propose business as usual with tried and true "under bosses." Which legacy (Weyth, King.....) will you bless? Some lawyers have better science backgrounds than you think. Maybe she can pick good reports and listen.

They get it at a smaller company so if/when they screw it up it does not affect a hundred thousand + employees, or the stock value for their investors who should be given the highest priority. If they can prove themselves on a smaller scale, then they can earn the right to lead larger companies in the same industry. At least, that is how intelligent people would do it.

The right? You have mixed rights with gifts like charisma, intuition and EIQ. Some have "it" and some don't. The change does not look unreasonable given her talents. You may not have been born with these talents, but you may have developed them over the years. You may be ready. We just don't know, but she has been vetted. Remember, there can be only one!

This is laughable..how about some actual, real experience working in pharma? Having a law degree, taking a science course and listening to others talk about pharma technical experience does not substitute for learning by doing...lawyers think they know the business because they read about it and listened to others with experience, what a joke

Yes, her talents and years of pharma practical experience to fall back on when making decisions that are not black and white...I have never coached basketball or played, but I read the paper, watch it on tv and listen to others who play talk about it, think I am ready for a head coaching job in the NBA

You are mixed up period. Gifts like charisma and charm do not equate to ability to do anything that requires brain function. The world has had plenty of charismatic people that could not do basic mathematical functions. Cult leaders have charisma, but they are frauds who literally have destroyed people. You live in a world that has distorted charm for actual intelligence because it makes you feel good about yourself. Steve Jobs was accused of NOT having the EIQ you claim is all that is needed to run a company. One reason he was fired twice from his own company. He actually had the brains and vision to run Apple and did not spend alot of time trying to fake his way through leading by charisma or charm. And being vetted by Kindler does not make one feel better about her intellectual abilities.

forget the talk of intellect, no one is denying that she is smart...but having a law degree and listening to legal issues associated with pharma does not qualify her or provide the industry background necessary to lead the business...and forget the argument that she lead nutri, that was to sell it...and being a figure head in consumer health, a business that Redmond built and is full of products that have been around forever does not cut it either...this is yet another head scratching decision by Pfizer leadership...obviously the PP that is arguing for her is a lawyer as well...
