Novartis will eliminate 1,100 jobs in Switzerland, with the balance in the U.S., Jimenez said. Some research will be moved to the U.S. from Switzerland, and reductions will be made in technical research and development, data management, clinical trial monitoring, drug safety and regulatory affairs. Novartis will add 700 positions in China and India in data management and trial monitoring, he said.

Drug Approval Delays

The company said in November it would cut 1,400 U.S. sales jobs. In March it said it would reduce operations in the U.K.

This was reported on Bloomberg... Sorry guys.

I just got layed off last year from Novartis. I was rehired, but I don't think I can put my family through that again...or myself for that matter. The stress during that time definitely took a few years off my life. I was lucky to be rehired, however I really hope to not have to go through that again this year. I hope Novartis has some stipulation in that it doesn't allow an employee to be layed off two years in a row (unless there are glaring behavioral issues, etc).

I saw this article this morning on a LINKED IN update and interesting that of everything I read and I read all the press releases that came from the different news agencies, this was the only one that mentioned 1400 US sales jobs.
Not to say that layoffs won't happen within the next 6-8 mos. I just don't think this piece of info is correct. I think this may have been picked up from what happened last year.
1400 sales jobs would be over half the sales reps within the next month.......??

See if you can see this exact quote anywhere else thats credible news source

I hope no one has to go through that again. The fact you were rehired shows you were not a behavior or performance issue, but were just standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Job loss is hell on individuals and families, especially when it is due to circumstances completely out of your control. There's no safe place right now so if you can, work on your plan B. Get a nursing degree, something, anything, that would land you another job if the need arises.

First, the reporter needs more training because the context draws from different periods of time. The reference to 1400 refers to last year. Prior to this comment, the reporter talks about Jimenez and what he accomplished when he started with Novartis. Also, the reference to November cuts uses the word "would" and not "will" which is grammatically more appropriate. Also, the UK went through this referred cuts in March 2011 already.

Bottom line, there will be more cuts in the US. Question is, how much, from what divisions, and when will the cuts take place. Hopefully Andy Wyss can answer this tomorrow.

My manager just unofficially told our team today that November 1st the South OU will receive voicmails about staying home on for Thursday November 3rd. No word on the amount being cut, but there will be a cut day.....

I did not see this article, but considering this is October if "the company said in November it would cut 1,400 U.S. sales jobs" they must be referring to last years cuts.

Novartis (NVS) will cut 2,000 jobs in the United States and Switzerland as it adds 700 new positions in lower cost countries, such as India and China.

The Swiss pharma giant employs about 121,000 people globally. It announced the cuts in tandem with its third quarter earnings report, which showed a net profit up 12 percent to $3.54 billion and sales of $14.84 billion, an increase of 18 percent relative to the same quarter a year ago.

The layoffs will accelerate an ongoing cost-cutting campaign, saving the company more than $200 million a year. The company will take a one-time restructuring charge of $300 million in the fourth quarter.

The staff cuts are part of a broader move to outsource functions including technical research and development, data management, clinical trial monitoring, drug safety, epidemiology, and drug regulatory affairs. The company will also relocate some research activities from Switzerland to the United States, it says. In addition, the company will close plants in Switzerland and Italy.

Net sales in the company's top six emerging markets rose 23 percent to $1.5 billion in the third quarter representing 10 percent of its total net sales during that period. Sales have been particularly strong in China, where revenues grew 42 percent in the third quarter compared to the third quarter of 2010, the company says.

Novartis isn't alone in cutting back jobs in high-cost economies only to ramp up its ranks in lower-cost countries. In August, Merck said it would shed 13,000 jobs, with 30 to 40 percent of the cuts to occur in the United States. Like Novartis, Merck maintains plans to hire in China. Roche is also shifting resources to China, where it intends to add as many as 750 new jobs while paring back its U.S. workforce.

I also got let go and rehired last year by Novartis. While I'm grateful I honestly thought last year (1400) would have been it for a very long time. I definitely did not think I'd be going through this again barely a year later. I really hope they have some consideration for people who went througt this already and were hired back. That's a lot of pressure not only on the employees but there families.

To Novartis, the rep is a number, a pretty simple dollar number at that. The speadsheets being reviewed will compare the reps number to another number, Profit. The call whether you stay or go is pretty simple for them at that point. That's business.
