1099 Orthopedic Reps... peripheral product lines

For the 1099 Ortho reps out there, what product lines have you picked up along the way to compliment your Smith and Nephew portfolio? How have these other lines helped and or hurt your relationships with current customers.

Additionally, what has your experience with these other companies been? Which are a pleasure to do business with, and which are more of a hassle thank they're worth?

I starten selling Golf equipment along with my S&N portfolio. I traded in my BMW for a van, and converted it to a mobile Pro Shop. I can now cover surgery AND Tee Time.

That's cool. Let's see S&N is a T4 level player which means when it comes to golf equipment you're probably repping Srixon golf balls and Cleveland Classic clubs. I.E. lousy orthopaedic equipment no Dr. will use unless paid and the same for the golf equipment. You must be so proud of that line-up. Good luck affording gas for the mobile pro shop.

As a former pilot with the air force, I picked up a private line. In between cases, I shuttle surgeons on corporate jets to Naples, FL, Honolulu, and other beautiful places on the weekends! Indiana sucks though. The Arthrex and Zimmerman jets fly so smooth....and the wives are so nice....I've been to several massage parlors with them at their request.

Its good to see that most of my suspicions regarding this site are accurate. Most of you are new, or not selling ortho... my guess is that many of you are wound, endo, and vag... thank god weve all merged under one ASD!

You guys are clowns.. likely W-2 clowns.. I hope you do well. I have been there, years ago I thought Smith and Nephew was the company I would retire from. Since then, I have been through, and survived all of the things that every one of you complain, bitch and whine about all day on this site. Who's going to be fired... who's the best manager... who's the worst.. who gives a fuck. Some day maybe all of you will be on your own, off of your guarantees, free to make your own decisions, and free to make something of yourselves...

I sincerely hope you all realize some day that the people you complain about all day (while you should be working) are not your bosses... The people who pay your bills are the physicians that you bend over backwards for day after day. Whether you are in Ortho, Endo, Wound, Or vagina.... your bosses are your physicians!

Start treating your career like a business and less of a job and I guarantee you will prosper...and survive in this competitive environment. Successful business owners are continually looking to grow their business... grow your business.. quit bitching... and grow up. You all are in a better business than your neighbors and friends... act like it.

GYN guy here, best post I've ever read on cp. quit bitching, control what you can, and disregard what you can't. Treat your territory like it's your own business, and you won't have to worry about fucking up because your docs will ensure your success. I'm really shocked at reading a quality post on cp. normally I just come here to laugh at the whining losers.

And it's kool-aid drinking pussy reps like you that roll over for the S&N BS! "Here's a larger freight bill"-OK, no problem, I'll just take a pay cut this month because I love working for S&N. Or, "No, we don't have any more Legion Sets to allocate you"-OK, no problem, I'll just wait an hour and a half till mine come out of the washer and deliver them to my other hospital for a case tomorrrow, because I love working for S&N. Or, "sorry, you're not entitled to an associate rep because you're only at $1.1M"-OK, no problem, I'll just orphan my wife and kids and skip sleep this week because I love working for S&N!!! You're the true spineless pricks that let's S&N think they can FUCK us all day long.

Man, I totally agree. If my job were that bad, I'd show them. I'd call in tomorrow and just quit. You shouldn't have to take that kind of crap for a crummy low 6 figure salary. You should just quit.

You're a whiny ass bitch! Listen to yourself, noone is saying S&N is the end all be all. If you're that miserable, and you're that fuckng awesome, why don't you just quit? I'd hate to see you have to mortgage your wife and kids, you queen. Last I checked, no one forces you to work for S&N. You aren't a slave, grow a sack and quit. Fucking queen.

If you're at 1.1m and you think you need an associate rep you don't deserve to be a "busy" rep doing 3+ million in business! Go find a Pharma job where you can put on your skirt and high heels and pass out pamphlets all day! Jesus Christ... I could do 1.1 million in this business with my eyes closed, playing golf every day that ends in Y... I hear Pfizer is hiring... who knows maybe those free viagra samples might even do you some good!

I will say that I was personally a little pissed when Smith and Nephew started charging us for shipping. This company does gouge us quite a bit... little by little they take take take.. first its shipping charges, then its a decrease in commissions. You need to be able to handle adversity, find ways to make it up... shit like this is never going to change, and until you own your own orthopedic company you are going to have to deal with it. Stop bitching... and then thank god that you are only going to take a $10,000 pay cut this year with the commission cut and not a $50,0000 pay cut. And if you still feel bad about how much you get charged for shipping each month, ill be happy to show you my check.... My shipping charges are likely more than your take home pay each month!

You all should thank god every single day that you are in Medical device sales, and basically the golden nugget of medical sales (since you mentioned legion revision, I assume you are full line). There are literally people lining up for your job... How many times a month (or week) does someone ask you to help them find a job? I bet its a fairly regular occurrence... All of the bitching I see on this site makes me want to put my head through the wall... fucking deal with it...

More importantly I was the one who started this thread, not one of you has answered or contributed to this thread... how did this turn into a soapbox of people complaining about shipping charges? Do none of you 1099's out there sell any other products? If you don't, you should.. I was hoping that some of you other ambitious reps out there would be able to cast some light on lines that might be a good find... so much for a productive thread... lets all just whine some more!

I need to go... my associate reps have cases to cover, and I have a tee time...

1099 responding to corporate guy asking about ancillary product lines. Yes we sell them & go f*** yourself. Your everyone wants your job & talk of tee times is great example of the horrible culture at SN. You have corporate decision makers who have never walked into an OR and been held accountable for SN's role in patient care. Sales keeps your paycheck coming in. Tell your family they are welcome for dinner on the table.

My point exactly! You are the bitch if you tolerate such an exuberant freight bill every month! There is no transparency in those bills and where exactly does the money go? And, which S&N executive came up with the formula for computing it? The rep is immediately disadvantaged if he does not have consigned sets, more than a few hospitals and\or a combination of both. I'm not bitter and I'm not leaving but I'll be damned if I'm going to alllow incompetence to go left unchecked. I've worked long and hard for my business and have been around long enough to realize S&N is full of wash outs and ignorants from other companies who realized their lack of skill and talent.

I was not disagreeing with you about the shipping my friend... Its bullshit. We have continually been cut off at the knees by S&N time and time again. Our cuts have come in the form of decreased commission, freight charges, loaner fees, etc. Check away, you have every right to do so, and when you figure out how to decipher where your money goes every month please let me know.

The more unfortunate part of all of this (and the bigger picture) is that the lucrative nature of this business has attracted many talented, intelligent people... Granted not all, but some of you out there are. Its a shame that the lure of this business is quickly vanishing.

IMO... we are following suit with other companies out there, i.e. decreased commission, etc., under the guise of keeping our business profitable through hard times and shrinking margins (which is laughable). Now is the time we should be incentivizing our sales teams, not taking it out at the knees. Smith and Nephew SHOULD be a company that people want to work for, we ought to have the best commission rate in the industry! We are the life-blood of this company, knocking us down only drives talented people away from this industry, and our customers take notice. Why not do things differently than everyone out there for a change, set ourselves apart from the competition, do things better instead of the same... Just a thought....
