New MBA here, and six months into this I am ready to quit.

175k is BS.

How many dicks do you have to suck?

You guys are hilarious. To the post two guys above this one:

Our reps that are 40 are very well respected in my company because they know the industry inside and out. We actually have quite a few product managers and higher level sales guys in their 50s and 60s here that do very well. The field I sell in is extremely complicated and extremely niche. I have been in 3 years and only know a fraction of what I need to know. If I stay here another 20 years, I'll still have a job. If I get let go, I know too much and can go to the competition. In fact that the competition calls me right now and I turn it down.

What is that MBA going to do for me? Is it magic? Does it stop me from getting fired? No, maybe it allows me to go into middle management where people are fired all the time for not producing? Come on guys, wake up. We are all expendable. Your MBA isn't a magic wand. I know plenty of MBAs right now making 70 grand right now. I also know a few MBAs right now tat get an unemployment check.

The sexual comments on here, I won't even dignify that with a response. Middle school banter as far as I am concerned.

It doesn't matter. Pharma is still sales.

A Chihuahua and a St. Bernard are vastly different, but are both still dogs. Same with pharma and non-pharma sales. Very different? Yes, still sales though!

Do you know the difference between sales and marketing? Pharma reps (at least a majority) are just marketers. They are a commercial for the doc. You can be part of the chain of sales (ie. mcdonalds order taker) and not be the salesperson. Ever hear the term "marketeer"?

Its funny how you all make fun of the pharma rep, making 75-125k for marketing...

while most of you are in stressed out sales jobs making 50k-75k,

and a few of you are selling your soul to the Almighty dollar for 100k-200k in device...

it looks like the pharma reps are the smart ones!

For God's sake, if the guy wants to think he's in sales then let him. We know he isn't but if it makes him feel better then let him think it.

Can't speak to your situation, but I'm in pharma sales. If you are nothing but a parrot spouting a commercial, then fine. I go about my job differently. Has nothing to do about how it makes me feel. It's what it is.

I know the difference. Apparently, you don't.

"Your marketing will consists of the measures you use to reach and persuade your prospects that you are the company for them. It's the message that prepares the prospect for the sales. It consists of advertising, public relations, brand marketing, viral marketing, and direct mail.

The sales process consists of interpersonal interaction. It is often done by a one-on-one meeting, cold calls, and networking. It's anything that engages you with the prospect or customer on a personal level rather than at a distance."

I'm not a magazine or a newspaper or a radio or a tv, so it's pretty apparent that I'm in pharma sales. How long have you been a robot?

Most of the device reps I know are drug addicts (coke) and alcoholics, so that tells you a lot about them.

and divorced...sometimes several times over.

I just love to bash on them, because I went to high school with a few. In school, they were the C students who barely got by, and thought they were good at sports, but I bashed their heads in every day.

And now, they do coke on the weekends, and they still want to hang out with me. but, I just come up with an excuse, because I don't want to chill with people like that.

Get this and learn it now: JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE MONEY OR MAKE GOOD MONEY, IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU SMART!

Its more like 85-135.

Teachers make more per hour, something to think about.

You really are misinformed...For entry level device sales yes this is what a device rep makes.

My base alone falls somewhere between those two numbers you listed as the total range of compensation.

You are probably looking at monster.com with jobs that list what the starting and total compensation is. Here is a hint for you, most high end device jobs are not flown on a website. You get a call from a random recruiter because the competition has asked them to contact you.

This happened last week to me. I said to the recruiter "I need a 120k base with another 100 in realistic commission to even do the phone screen"....pause....she responds..."based on your qualifications that is completely within the scope of what they are willing to pay."

Guys, your understanding of what a device rep is pretty comical.

Here is a news flash:
I work 35 hours a week
I do 3 presentations a week roughly
I am in my home office 2 days a week making calls and emails. On those days I roll out of bed at 9 AM and close up shop by 1 pm.

Until you have sold devices your opinion doesn't really matter. It is simply ignorance. That being said, I sold pharmaceuticals for 3 years and left not only because my base was $30k more than the previous pharma job and not only because the commission is 90k at plan (very attainable)

BUT because

Device is even easier than being a drug rep. So for those of you that revel in how easy it is to be a drug rep, try looking at device. It is even easier. If you hit your numbers, which I do most quarters, you never hear from anyone at my company. If you sell a good product, the thing sells itself if you know how to close.

MBA is a good degree, as long it is from a top 50 school.

Those that don't think so, are usually those without one.

That's make experience with this (I don't have an MBA). That goes for education in general. I find that people without degrees think that you don't need one.

Most people with money think education is good.

Now, sales reps that think they are so great because they have been able to keep a 6 figure income in a bad economy with a 4 year degree (mostly by luck or kissing ass), think they are God's gift to sales, and think they are so good that they don't need an MBA or other advanced degree.

what these people fail to see is that they mostly got lucky (especially in pharma, where age discrimination is now rampant, and where you only get a job if you know someone). Pharma jobs are not obtained by hard work or intelligence, not anymore at least.

My take is that the MBA degree is worthwhile, as long as you know what you want to do with it, as long as it comes from a good school, and as long as it is affordable.

Screw people that say its worthless, as these morons have a 4 year degree in drinking and physical education, and never read a book with pictures, other than the great book, "How To Kiss Ass And Keep Your Job, With No Talent".

SO TRUE 100%
