Zimmer pledges to keep reps in Biomet buy

Per "the" letter to employees on May 20, 2014.

"It is our intention that all sales representative positions from both companies will be retained post-closing......We should keep in mind that we are independent companies until the transaction closes and we must compete as vigorously as we did before the announcement of the merger." Overall, the CEOs stressed that the merger will provide employees with "enhanced opportunities" and aimed to keep them focused.

Or, in other words; "Please, please, please everybody, don't jump ship and screw us before this deal closes, and we screw you."

Fast forward 18 months....

The Co-CEOs stated, "That letter HAD to be written, whether or not the sales reps were being axed in 12 months. We both had a responsibility to our shareholders to keep the two separate entities whole in order to make THIS merger successful and as rewarding to our shareholders, as it has been. Mergers such as this are always challenging and there are always tough decisions that have to be made but we believe based on the CURRENT numbers, based on TODAY, we lied as little as was required and did a damn good job with this deal. Now, let's all hold hands, sing 'I'm Happy' and look to the future, NOT the past. Go Zimmermet!!!"

Any rep believing this letter is naïve. I don't typically see reps fired in this business; rather, companies make their jobs/lives so miserable they leave. In leaving, it strengthens the company's position during "non-compete" litigation. If you are in a position of strength versus Zimmer Rep -- then stay. If not, look for a soft landing.

What will happen to the independent distributors that carry the Biomet sports line but not the joint line? Will that all be absorbed by the Zimmer crew or left untouched?

"It is our intention that all sales representative positions from both companies will be retained post-closing..."

Zimmer's primary "intent", post integration, is to achieve greater market saturation and be positioned for future growth in all combined divisional segments. To achieve this, they will need to address the new combined company's business segments structure. From the sales perspective, it means looking at each business segment requirements....some don't require instruments to support the sale, while others are highly service intensive. Each segment has profit margin variability that may contribute whether the sales structure is Direct or Independent, Specialized or Full-Line. Independent distributorships are all cultural organizations and the larger the sales force, the challenges are greater for achieving scalable businesses that can drive alignment, investment and success above the market.
All that to say, while it may be Zimmer's "intent to retain all sales representatives from both companies", the sales structure will look very different than it does today.
...how it shakes out is why everyone's talking!

I know you you are Captain Obvious!! You are my old business/marketing professor at The University of Six Flags Over Texas!! You always wore a big red nose, blonde frizzy wig and the size 24 shoes to class every day when you lectured us in class on MWFs and you had us rolling in the aisles because you were so funny. Tenure is great in academia because you can't fire clowns and idiots like you.

and what about all the ones who spend most of their time selling compound pain creams? Will they still be able to sell those and do other side gigs?

Good day Sir

I would quit then. Even with the changes in the compound industry I still make 50k/month[/QUOTE

Please quit…$50K a month selling pain cream? Really?
See you at a stop light in a couple of months holding a cardboard sign begging for money. Insurance companies are shutting this scam down fast,

sorry, but you are definitely wrong about this. Insurance still paying, but lower and pain patches doing fantastic. The physician owned pharmacies will be investigated and shut down. But the naysayers of compound cream sales are just jealous they didn't get on board so they keep saying no one is paying for them etc. etc. I have several friends that make anywhere from about 5-90k per month doing this. It is fact whether you like it or not.
