Zydus Cadila has received tentative approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its generic Xeljanz (tofacitinib tablets, 5 mg).

Tofacitinib is used alone or with other medications, including methotrexate, to treat moderate to severe forms of rheumatoid arthritis.

The product helps to decrease pain, tenderness and swelling in the joints.

The company said the generic would be manufactured at the group’s formulations manufacturing facility at Moraiya, Ahmedabad

Pfizer, Inc. recently filed a Xeljanz lawsuit accusing a generic drug maker of infringing on its patents for the blockbuster rheumatoid arthritis (RA) medication.

Xeljanz Lawsuit Seeks to Prevent Sales of Generic Version
In February, Ajanta Pharma submitted an Abbreviated New Drug Application to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requesting approval to market a generic version of the 5 mg Xeljanz (tofacitinib) tablets. That application included a “Detailed Statement” asserting that Pfizer’s Xeljanz patents are invalid.

Pfizer filed its Xeljanz lawsuit last month in Delaware federal court, disputing that assertion and claiming that its patents would not begin to expire for several more years. Among other things, the company is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent Ajanta from selling its generic medication. (Case No. 1:19-cv-00517-UNA)

Xeljanz is one of Pfizer’s top-selling drugs, so it’s understandable that the drug maker would want to hold off generic competition as long as possible

Well some Xeljanz people who are strategic and knowledgable vs the ones who are "yes men, sounds great, check the metric boxes", this doesnt surprise them.
5mg patent came out yrs before XR so if XR goes LOE in 4yrs then 5mg is already there.
Also doesnt surprise me Pfizer hasnt said a word about it and buried all the headlines on the 100th Google page.

All good things must come to an end, and Xeljanz has had a good run. Time to move on or get buried with X when it is put to the graveside. Was fun while it lasted.
2019 was peak sales & next 48m into LOE will be a normal product lifecycle decline that starts 5yrs before LOE so Xeljanz lasted longer than most in a crowded market
(Cant believe VP put a 25% growth goal for 2020 after missing 2019 by a mile)

This is true for the 5mg Pfizer has lost in courts so 5mg is generic for 1/100th the price.

True

Yes Xeljanz 5mg has been generic for a year now but hidden from the field with loosing the court cases in other countries.
If you are a Xeljanz rep and news of 5mg generic suprises you then you are either totally clueless or drinking Pfizer blue coolaide believing everything your shady VP is telling you.
Its been in the news and pharma briefings for few years now. Wake up & get your head out of the clouds. You all are clueless idiots for not knowing whats going on with your own product.

Anybody who reads & keeps up w industry knew this 2 yrs ago! Only ones who would not is shelter close minded Pfizer hung the moon reps. 5mg has been available generic outside US for a while & you can get for 150m through mail order . Pfizer has intentionally kept from reps to keep motivation strong. But this is old news for the higher IQ reps who actually read non Pfizer info.

Diddo as Xeljanz Generic is old news for those of us reps that dont live in a blue glass bubble clueless to the outside world.
Pfizer has burried all the articles & stories of lost court cases on 5mg patent though to like the 30th google search page to hide from the reps.

Old news 18 months now
Pfizer given up fighting 5mg as now being challenged in court for XR patent and already lost in India.

Pfizer will do with XR what they did w Lipitor, Celebrex, Lyrica, Norontin, and other Billion dollar drugs.
2yrs before LOE reach a royalty deal w Teva or Mylan to sell the generic exclusively 2yrs before LOE & other generics hit.
So instead of 2024 2025 stop promoting Xeljanz, it will likely be 2022 2023 with the current Generic court challenges and early royalty deal like they have always done w blockbusters

Those reps who are good, already know about Xeljanz 5mg generic over the past year.
The clueless reps drunk on blue wine are only ones not aware.
XR is next
