Why would you want to keep this silly job anyway?

Ok...I know the economy is total crap...and it is nice to have a paycheck,
but pharma sales?? for a career? really? Has that what it has come down to for
people with bachelors degrees these days??

I mean, you would probably get more respect and have more dignity working at
Enterprise Car Rental or 3-day Blinds, than slinging more lattes than a baurista
at Starbucks...

I can see the new college grads, (that means you Barbies & Kens) trying pharma sales
for a couple of years to get their pretty feet wet, but anyone that stays longer than
that is putting themselves in a real hurt locker for the future...

greed killed this industry...management ended up being the winners...just about
everybody else ended up being losers...sad...

It takes about a year after leaving this stupid industry to get the taint off...and to heal
from the toxic wounds pharma (Merck) inflicts so willingly on its own.

Enterprise Car Rental has horrible hours, is a harder job, and pays a fraction of Pharma sales, without the benefits. I agree with you that the rep job is a horrible thoughtless and demeaning job, with incredible golden handcuffs. I would also suggest that those that can, do a couple of years in the field then move into the home office in marketing, training, Sales Ops, Business Development, etc. You work harder, but you actually develop professionally and have something to offer to someone else. Maybe in another industry.

Pharma sales should be part-time, at best, occupied by women with school aged children, at no more than 20-25 per hour. As long as these jobs pay way out of scale, compared to others, for what it entails, there will always be people lining up to take them. Even at the detriment of their careers.
