That makes no sense. I do not understand the logic of doing that. Companies do not hire late in the year. Most companies will not let people go on a Friday. If you do that on a Friday, the person has nothing to do except think about it over the weekend. The best time is Mondays because they can start sending resumes out and keeps themselves busy.

So is there going to be sales force layoffs this year before or after holidays? I say in January like it always is, a couple more months and then 50% are gone
Will only sales get laid off ot will it be company wide? With new products I don't think sales will get hit that hard right now.
It's because they want to continue to make your life miserable even after they have sacked you.
You cal also this question, "Why they send training materials to our homes right before a holiday and keep saying go enjoy and don't open the box...then the fist teleconference after the holiday and the manager would ask for your reaction and progress of the materials?"

It is the new reality. As long as there are holidays, Merck will have layoffs.
Directly obtained from a Merck HR Director: Merck does not lay people off on Friday because Merck has found that they could use Friday to apply the company's spin to the layoff. If you let people go on Friday, the separated colleagues stay in the loop with their former colleagues and the company's spin arrives too late to be believed. They prefer Tuesday through Thursday to let you go.
Are you suggesting that Merck would "spin" tales about former employees to mislead the remaining employees into thinking that Merck did the right thing? Oh, come on, that's just silly. Merck would never do such a thing. They are such a noble group of managers. They told me so many times.
Merck is being humane. They want to lay you off at the beginning of a holiday so you have ample time to polish your resume for the next endeavor. Similarly, they want to lay you off during a weekday so you can spend a long weekend working on your next phase of your life. Merck is being considerate, proactive and caring.
I really hope you are joking. If not I feel sorry for you.
I was being cynical. I always think the timing of layoffs has something to do with cooking the book. Merck has not been humane for a decade and more now.
