Why do managers pay for lunch?

There are many weird things that go on at this company but this one is the worst! What does it mean? Why is it important? Why can't two adults just have lunch-each paying for their own meal or taking turns. Bizarre and Crazy behavior indeed!

Stupid comment. When working with a rep in the field, managers should be able to pay for the lunches out of their expense report. Some companies use to do that and it relieves the awkwardness of having to sit down with your manager and worry about how cheap this company is. If you also do the math...when a manager has to work in the field 3-4 times a week they don't have to fork out an extra $60.00+/week out of their wallets. This cheap ass company probably worries about the extra expense but they don't have a problem flying a bunch of reps to Seattle for a worthless awards meeting that no one gives a shit about attending. That's why they have WebEx..... Who makes these decisions anyways?

If a manager buys you lunch it comes out of their pocket not the expense acct. Thank them!
You won't have to worry about an awards meeting next year this is the last year all on the reps recommendation.

Throughout Merck, the most senior person present at the meal always pays. Their senior, who was not at the meal, then approves their expense report. It's supposed to keep it all on the up and up.

This is a useless post. The least a manager can do is pick up the tab when 2 people are eating a meal. You are going to be talking about business anyway which by the way is perfectly allowable by IRS standards.

The stupidity of pharm reps is boundless.

absolutely correct. Eliminates the scenarios in which a manager and employee go to lunch, the employee submits and that same manager approves. Actually saw several senior leaders (Exec dirs) dismissed for this type of activity. He/she did the right thing. I'm sure they used their Amex
