Where did the vaccine division go?

I've been working in the vaccine division for many years. I've survived many changes that I knew weren't right. If the vaccine division is what it was 10 years ago, we wouldn't be in the situations we are in now. So sad. Adult division came along, then peds go to 2 up, then peds lays one off, then consolidation of adult and peds. Please make up your mind. Bring the peds sales force back. Better focus = better sales.

Sadly this won't happen and like you, I have been with the Vaccine Division for awhile. The fools running things have the Primary Care mindset and they are stuck on this "there is so much potential in adult" delusion. We have been trying to prop up Zostavax for 10 years and it has never lived up to its potential because of supply situations in the beginning, confusing reimbursement (private one way, Med D another way), docs burned by reimbursement and generally a primary care provider group that sees maintenance care of chronic diseases as a priority over preventative medicine (cancer, diabetes, copd, and heart issues come before Vaccines). The defense strategy for P23 was put in place at the very last minute against P13 and we are getting killed by P13's better reimbursement and the removal of incentives for hospitals to vaccinate which were our largest users.

Our leadership's assumption is Pediatrics has flattened out and there is no more opportunity to grow even though the pediatric franchise (MMR II, Varivax, ProQuad, RotaTeq, Gardasil and Gardasil 9) brings in billions more than Lostavax and Pnomorevax 23 without reps spending much time in Ped offices. Oh, and as long as some disease doesn't take out libido or fertility, making babies is going to steadily happen no matter the state of the US economy or even around the world. Hell, China is loosening its 1 child policy but I digress.

When these idiots tried to add to the adult portfolio, they brought in 2 adult Vaccines that sucked efficacy wise and 1 caused febrile seizures (Afluria aka Aflurian't and TD aka Totally Disappeared). We don't even sell those 2 anymore. The bottom line is the dumb@ss tablet leadership who took over sold Ken Frazier on adult Vaccines is the future of the division and Savior of Merck. They are now going all in on this dumb idea to save face and save their jobs. Hang in there. You may not get paid on Zostavax but you can get paid on the Gardasil franchise. All of Pharma sucks right now because those double talking, backstabbing reps who climbed the corporate ladder quickly with little sales experience are the ones running the pharmaceutical companies off the cliff, especially at Merck. Take care and keep taking the check for as long as you can.

Again. Why would Merck pay sales reps to sell ped vaccines that sell themselves? You are not going to grow utilization of these vaccines in the US. The only kids not vaccinated are the ones who belong to people stupid enough not to vaccinate at all.

We are the only manufacturer for most of our ped vaccines, and in those ped markets where we do have competition, we still have 50% marketshare without us promoting it. We would be CRAZY to have a ped-focused sales team.

You hate adult vaccines, but they = job security.

They scrapped Peds because the writing is on the wall that G-sil is about to die a slow death. Let's face it, it's harming kids. Not just a few or even a few thousand. That vaccine should have never been approved. I knew it from the very start.

We are not the only pediatric manufacturer of Vaccines. GSK has pediatric Vaccines and they will continue to expand their pediatric portfolio. Sanofi does too. Know what you are talking about before you start babbling. I never said stop selling adult Vaccines. I just think it is stupid to spend the majority of our time in adult vaccines when Merck leadership hasn't equipped it's salesforce to handle a reimbursement problem that no marketing message can fix for Zostavax and P23. More needs to be done up top to change the behaviors of Primary Care. Making them feel guilty for not vaccinating more just isn't cutting it and we have been doing this for 10 years with no success.

Well that's your problem. It should be about the patient and protecting them against serious diseases.

The vaccine division will be gone once GSK's shingles vaccine is approved. Jan N. will also be gone by next year. Everyone is looking for other jobs right now as the CTL's are jumping to account positions now and vaccine rep division has lost 10 out of 50 reps already. Good luck to everyone.

It is about the patient @sswipe troll which is why you don't see a lot of serious diseases in millions of US kids because they are getting vaccinated!!!!!!!!!!

Don't see a lot of serious diseases in millions of US kids? We've never been sicker. Let's see... trading typically innocuous, immune-system building childhood illnesses like measles and chicken pox for this:

1 in 2 children have at least one chronic illness
1 in 6 has a learning disability
1 in 8 has asthma
1 in 10 has "adhd"
1 in 12 has food allergies
1 in 20 has seizures
1 in 45 has autism

You might try reading the vaccine package inserts. Tripedia - may cause autism. Thimerosal - may cause mental retardation. Flu shots - Guillain Barre like crazy. Seizures, epilepsy, eczema, asthma, syncope, encephalopathy, paralysis, death.

Let's do a case study -- go to the pharmacy and get caught up on the CDC schedule. I'm guessing you're sexually active, so don't forget all three doses of the new, improved Gardasil 9 (500 mcg aluminum per shot). Report back to us in 6 months -- if you can still remember how to use a keyboard.

Still talking about 2-up in Ped. My god that was over a decade ago. Please stope with that nonsense and retire.

Anyone in vaccines, get your affairs in order asap.
Calls coming, total annihilation, every man for themself, update your resume, head for the hills, you have been warned.
Huuuuge announcement coming. Tic tock. Hurry.

Don't you mean, where have they been? This sales team at Merck is some of the last remaining useless people in the company. Thank god we are taking a machete to this useless team. If you disagree it is only because you think you are relevant and you are not. Haha.
