I've lived in tornado land for almost 9 years now and have spent lots of time in the basement and have replaced more roofs and trees than I can count. We've had cars look like they were sandblasted and had an AC unit land on top of one. But never anything like this. Reports are there were 198 mph winds.
Luckily the high school graduation was held at the university so no one was at the high school when it was destroyed. The stories from the hospital are amazing including sending patients down stairwells on mattresses. This being the midwest, there are lines of volunteers from neighboring states. There are immediate needs of water, clean clothes, soap and waterless sanitizers, a roof, and blood. The real needs will come in the weeks to follow when everyone gets on with their business and forgets all about it.
Another bad system forecast for the entire alley tomorrow night. I'm not sure you will convince Joplin that they didn't just see the end of the world.
No matter what your passion is, you can find a way to help. The high school and 4 elementary schools, hospital, walmart, home depot, 4 churches and more were destroyed. Animals are wandering hurt and bewildered.
