I have been asked what career field I would go for if I had to do it over. If I was under 30 I would seriously consider becoming an Air Traffic Controller. SERIOUSLY. I have a friend, younger than I who will retire soon with about 80K a year in retirement pay after 30 years on the job. If you have a clear speaking voice, a good set of eyes and any interest at all in flying, a career in ATC would be a good idea. They make MORE than the typical drug rep and the benefits are superior. Just a thought.

Good luck my friends and remember......

Never let the bastards get you down.

Wrong my friend. A buddy of mine us retiring as a firefighter at age 50, $75,000 pension and only worked 9 days a month. He was cackling about it the other day.

What about if you're close to 50 with 15 years in pharma?

Well my friend, I was 60 with 24 years in pharma last year when I was let go. At the recent National Sales Meeting I attended there was a 65 year old women just hired. Lots of people within the last year hired who looked a bit long in the tooth but there are companies out there looking for experienced people. Look for smaller companies and upstarts, they do exist.

Good luck my friend and remember......

Firefighters are on for 24 hours at a time. Nine days would be 27 regular shifts. You want to run into burning buildings and work your ass off, go ahead. An ATC sits in a comfortable chair in an air conditioned environment and the most physical activity will be getting up to go to the break room. I would rather have the assurance of a Federal Pension than a state or local municipality which might get cut when the taxes can't pay for the pension.

I was 62 when I was let go, had a job within 4 months in the medical field, of course I did have an advanced degree. I make $75,000, not what I did with Novartis but with my Novartis pension ($4200 net/month) I will exceed what I made last year. It all comes down to looking outside the restrictive box that most pharma reps find themselves locked in to.

It's all where you live. My buddy has never been in a burning building and county ordinance requires no building to he over 4 stories. He has had to scrape a lot of people off the freeway though.. Not pleasant...
