What kind of accounts do you call on in the research sector?

I have a phone interview coming up with the hiring manager. I was told by the screening phone interviewer that this position was doing research sales at things like colleges and pharmaceutical companies and whatnot. She also said no healthcare-related places like hospitals would be called on.

The territory it covers only has like 3 colleges. There are no pharma companies or any big research companies that I know of. Other than those 3 colleges, as as well as the local government (I was told they're the biggest account), what other types of research entities would this position be focusing on?

Not sure about in the research sector, but on the ImmunoCAP side they have in the not so distant past preferred to call on accounts where the physicians can be bribed to order. Further, they really like to do business with labs in the northeast which will build obnoxiously oversized panels. You live in New Jersey and never go to Texas? Let's make sure you're not allergic to Texas mountain cedar!

You would be expected to do what it takes to get the business in a fairly short time period. You will not be given tools other than standard sales lines. It is understood you will get the business. read note above carefully.

This is not true- you will be given plenty of tools and connections to get the business. It is very possible that you only have a few colleges, I am on the research sales team with only 1 big university account- but there are 100+ labs there.

Basically you ill be asked to convert business from local small distributors and VWR.
