What exactly does a customer team leader do?

Field rides every time you turn around, evaluate your "competency" to do your job, increase "trust and value" and make your life an unmitigated hell - other than that, not much

So a CTL's role is to be a team leader of customers. Who are their customers? The physicians or the reps? If the latter, when do reps become customers? Does a CTL provide any valuable service to the reps? If the former, then should their focus be calling on the physicians? If so, should they focus on the physicians' needs during a field visit rather than picking a rep apart for not creasing their pants correctly?

Former districts are now customer teams. CTLs are to lead these customer teams which is where you will find reps. The problem lies in Merck's definition of lead....

True. CTLs are dependent on being led by the team. Unless they live in territory few really know it well. They know a few big accounts from visits, MMFs, display programs or
names listed on weeklies and monthlies but they dont have a fraction of the knowledge the rep has.

CTL tries to be buddy with a key customer during a field visit. Key customer looks at the CTL with a bewildered expression. Who is this guy trying to be my friend? I don't know him. Every time he is here he hyperventilates and jump all over me. I hope he will leave soon so I can resume my dialog with the rep.

when they are not on teleconferences they are pestering their reps on field visits and helping us to get tossed out of offices with their heavy handed approach. Its ok though-I heard from a great inside source that CTL's will be in the next "layer" of cuts next year. They are also looking at how many reps managers are managing....the number I heard was about a 30--40% reduction in CTL head count. I will come back in spades. Karma....thats what its called.

Yea...they'll get cut from the field, and get placed someplace else, inside.

Out of our hair and into some other team's hair...

Generally...they jeopardize business by forcing field representatives to invasively "detail" providers and anger staff. Manager field rides on a monthly basis are not necessary. If the industry hired responsible medical sales professionals there would be no need for frequent ride alongs. The issue is (was) selection in the HR process.
This industry and company are in dire straits and they have placed themselves in this precarious position. It is sad for those who have committed themselves and their careers to the irresponsibility of this sub-optimal leadership. The saddest aspect of the entire situation is the fact that Senior Leadership pretends to care about employees and their families. Phooey!
