What’s with all the promotion announcements?

It’s a joke. Everyone that I work with is making fun of the title inflation. We have “Associate Directors” with no direct reports. These titles are also leading to a lot of confusion from new applicants. A buddy of mine who is a legit director at a smaller firm applied for a new “director” job at Lilly and became angry because their time was wasted by the title bait-and-switch. I don’t know what our company was thinking when they decided to go this direction.

It is legit hilarious to see everyone changing their title on LinkedIn as a “promotion”. Sorry, you are renamed and AVP, you were not promoted. You are a director level, not promoted to senior director. Wouldn’t you be embarrassed to have all of these people congratulating you as if you actually did something?

The internal story is that they made the change to be consistent with the external market so they could attract talent into the appropriate level. They wasted a ton of money and pissed off a lot of people. Another example of our inept leadership

Why all of a sudden do we have associate VPs? Directors are now Sr. Directors? Retention tactic?

The answer is pretty simple when you understand Lilly’s motives. And it has nothing to do with promoting talent. I have been watching all of these “Associate” promotions on LinkedIn and guess what? Very few are white males. This is about giving us some more diversity boxes to check. Nothing more.

White males had new titles too. The ones I know didn’t mark them as promotions.

It’s an embarrassment to truly qualified minorities.

Too many hires and promotions of people out of their depth in jobs they are not capable of doing well. Everyone suffers!

This continued psychotic press for diversity is almost as bad the racism of the 19th century.
