VPak is the 2014 Edsel

A little back history...Business, Marketing majors and MBA's are probably familiar with this case study. For those not familiar read on.

The Edsel was an automobile marque that was planned, developed, and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company during the 1958, 1959, and 1960 model years.

With the Edsel, Ford had expected to make significant inroads into the market share of both General Motors and Chrysler and close the gap between itself and GM in the domestic American automotive market.

But contrary to Ford's internal plans and projections, the Edsel never gained popularity with contemporary American car buyers and sold poorly.

The Ford Motor Company lost millions of dollars on the Edsel's development, manufacturing and marketing.

The very word "Edsel" became a popular symbol for failure.[1]

Sound familiar? VPak is a modern day Edsel.

Well, I do appreciate your pontification. But I prefer to think of VK as an also-ran. Better analogy in my humble opinion.

The point is:

Ford: contrary to the company's internal plans and projections, it never gained popularity with it's targeted customers and sold poorly.

AbbVie and VPak: contrary to the company's internal plans and projections, it never gained popularity with it's customers and sold poorly.

Unfortunately we'll lose our jobs over this.

We can replace reps no problem. Replacing VPs and National Sales Directors is a problem.

No it's not. There are great executives always looking for their next challenge. The issue is not the rep or even the DM. It's the marketing plan and senior managements bad decision to move with the plan. If the expectation was 7-10 market share then no issues at all.

What exec wants to take over this mess?
