ValleyLab Position

I am interested in a Position for the Valleylab division in Michigan. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight about this position? Long term outlook, realistic earning potential, time spent on "activity reports" vs being in the field, etc. I am in B2B sales now and will probably earn right around 100k. I thought a medical device sales position would be a great career move and wanted to get some feedback before the interview process gets too far along.

I have read a lot about the company and I am getting a mixed review. Half say run away because the pay isn't there and upper mgt is awful, while half say it is a good gig. I just thought I would give you some specifics to see what your thoughts were on the territory as well as the position. Thank you in advance for any and all info.

Its a good gig, market leader with very cool, game changing technology in pipeline. If answering your phone from customers wanting to spend thousands on your equipment is a bad gig, I dont know what to tell you.

Competitors dont come close. I dont work for Valley Lab either....I just see their stuff in EVERY hospital I go to.

Just my 2 cents for what its worth.

Thank you for your input! Please keep the input flowing...this could be a big move and I don't want to put my family at risk by making a bad decision. Thank you again!

I posted for the MI Valleylab spot and just took the test. Now what? If I passed do I automatically get a call? Or just dumped in the pile for HR to sort through? I have extensive B2B and make around $180K - I hope I can do at least that.

I know some of the reps who and its a nightmare This is a territory with high turnover the past 5 years and all the business is locked down no chance of getting it back. It will get you into medical sales but you probley will be looking next year

The numbers are the same coming in: 45k base to make 125-135k first year uncapped. You'll hear a ton of different stories, maybe 145k first year but don't hold you breath for much higher.

You will not hear from them unless they have interest and if you passed the test which they will not notify you regarding the results. They are currently looking at med device reps only in other cities and there are some current Covidien reps putting their hat in the ring. If they have a track record of success in another division, especially in Auto, Syneture or Hernia, they will usually be a front runner.

I'm assuming that you're probably interviewing for either the Ann Arbor or Flint territories, correct? Here's one thing that you need to consider, the hospitals that you will be calling on do a wonderful job at limiting access to sales representatives. Unless you have a written letter from God to give to the OR manager, don't expect to step foot into University of Michigan. That's the same for some of the other accounts as well.

I knew the previous Flint representative and his biggest issue was the pressure to sell the Force Triads into his accounts. Sure, he got it into a few accounts but the fact of the matter is the Michigan is probably the worst state in terms of the economy and the hospitals are losing money at a ridiculous pace. You think that an account is going to spend capital money on a new generator when they are freezing nurses wages?

Oh yeah, and don't forget about reprocessing either. Spoke with an Ascent rep and they are very close to getting a 510K for Ligasure disposables, specifically Impact. Once that hits, your base of business will go bye-bye.

I thought the Harmonic was more in demand.

Looking into position as an associate/overlay. No OR exp but great sales track record in direct sales. What should I expect for a base? Whats commission structure like for this position?

Corporate culture? Micromanagers? Send the details!

Re: Energy Expert/ValleyLab Position in Southern CA

Interviewing for the Energy Expert position and just wanted to ask a couple of questions.

How's management for the region?
Is there a lot of potential in territory?
Competition?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I guess every region is different. I've been with EbD in the western US for 5 years and have nothing but praise for the products, culture and management. Would like to make more money, but otherwise it is a great gig.

Well this company has been hiring derelicts as Managers in Michigan for the better part of a decade. Talk to anyone in Energy, Soft Tissue, Endomechanical. They will all tell you that everytime they turn around someone is fired, hired, resigned. Energy has been through 3 Regional Managers in 5 years. They have been through 14 Energy Experts in 5 years. The real problem exists because every few years the AVP role is promoted and a new douchebag rolls in and hires his buddy to be the manager of Motor City. When this happens that hired douchebag manager rolls into town thinking he is god and thinks that he can lead a team of professionals by threatening and intimidating the reps about the possiblity of losing their jobs. The only thing that happens is the whole structure keeps recycling and the hospitals in the state think Covidien EBD is a joke. What really needs to happen is that someone like Rich J. Meelia needs to come in an clean the cancer out of this organization and start with solid and respectable people. Greed is the only means that this organization will ever care about. Its very very unfortunate. The only takeaway is that this will never change and you are total azz clown if you interview for the role of Energy Expert in Michigan.

I am a recruiter who used to work for Covidien about 6 years ago. I can share that there is really negative buzz throughout the First Interview Network that Covidien EBD is a very negative and cut throat organization. I have also heard a lot of people tell me about how often managers threaten and intimidate their reps, especially here in the midwest. I actually don't know of any other surgical company that has a higher turnover rate. I guess they should stop making total losers managers. I have heard from several colleagues that Coviden EBD is chuck full of incompetent and paranoid managers. Lets be honest people, in 4 years when Intuitive commissions Cardica from Europe or develops their own vessel sealing with the robot, Ligasure will be dead. When that happens you better polish your resumes...

I was the manager in Michigan in 2006. Let me just say that the Kendall management has poisoned Covidien EBD. Anyone who tells you anything different is lying or trying to save themselves. A rancid environment all together. Obviously anyone on here that disputes these posts is part of the fake and greedy majority at this organization.
