To those of you on BI contract....

I am considering an offer and would appreciate some honest feedback....BI manager seems like a great person....base salary not great but not bad for my area of the country....but the benefit costs seem crazy high....almost $900 every 4 weeks to insure your family? Am I reading this right? So if you had it to do again. Would you take the job or keep looking? Do you truly feel like some on this board that taking this contract is killing your chances for a more permanent position?

Thanks for the honest feedback.....

The benefits are incredibly expensive. I've worked here for about a year--laid off from big pharma. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still take the job, though. My mortage payments are still due each month!!

I've been looking for other opportunities since I started and explained to the interviewers that I'm w/ in Ventiv for the exact reason stated above. I've gotten through a couple rounds of interviews with a couple of companies and haven't ultimately been selected for the job, but I don't honestly think that's b/c of my time w/ in Ventiv.

Now realize this job does suck, but it is an income.

$900 per month sounds a bit steep. I'm not paying that much... are u on the GOLD plan or something?

I'd be looking - hard. Like above poster I was laid off from big Pharma and took this job out of necessity. It does pay well - close to 70/year, which is decent money for where I live and for my family's lifestyle (we only have a mortgage, food, utilities). Add bonus to this and I'm pushing mid-80s. Not bad for the degree of work I do.

Given the fact that I have kids and need insurance, yes, I'd do it again. You do what you have to do. But you've ultimately gotta look out for u and ur future. Is there a chance for me to 'promote' here? No. Do I consider this a career like big Pharma? No way. Even getting back on w big Pharma is no guarantee of longevity (in no career field is this a possibility in today's times, unfortunately). If u can get on with another company as a NORMAL, regular, full-time employee, I'd go for it. Just ensure you've got the job before jumping ship - and leave Ventiv on good terms b/c u may need them again in the future (hopefully not, but...).

And don't believe for a minute that contract sales is killing one's chances of getting a permanent position in big Pharma. Hiring managers aren't idiots: they know ur doing what ur doing b/c of the current environment - what are u supposed to do, NOT take a job that's offered to you when u have bills to pay? If your track record is above-average from big Pharma - or Ventiv, if u can figure it out - you'll be fine.

Work ongesturing a secondary source of income. Whether it's a part-time job, owning rental property, mowing yards - u name it - have something else working for you on the side starting today. You never know how this industry as a whole is going to pan out. With growing generic drug availability, it's going to remain increasingly hard for Pharma companies to turn a profit. Radically (yes, radically) change the way ur living/working now and protect yourself for future events.

Very well said!!

Wow!! that insurance sounds high. Mine is much lower. I think there are two or three different tiers of coverage. I have the basic plan and it is as good as I had in big pharma. Make sure you check all the options. I love Aetna compared to Blue Cross. They answer the phone and actually answer you questions.

Remember..... all pharma job satisfaction is pretty much based on who your manager is, so if you really like the manager it sounds pretty good to me.

Great points from someone who seem to have their head on straight. As as DM with InVentiv, I recognize that the people I'm interviewing want to be in a more secure position instead of contract sales; but like the previous poster, this is where you landed, so be grateful for work at this time in the economy and do your best.

Here's a hint as to why, in some ways, your experience at Contract Pharma is valuable--when it comes time for you to interview with Big Pharma or elsewhere, if the hiring DM sees the big picture and Venitv's place in it...your experience as a top performer HERE will carry more weight, if presented correctly. Why? Because those in the industry KNOW this is a stepping stone for most, and if you know that while you are here and still PERFORM well, that speaks to not only your ability as a rep, but it tells VOLUMES about your character, your ability to self-motivate and work well with others...lots of things. Again, you need to know how to position this, but in front of a good DM, this means EVERYTHING.

Good luck to all.

I was one of the positive posters earlier on. This individual needs to realize that although Ventiv is better than unemployment, it still SUCKS. Do you even work at in Ventiv or are you a holier than thou SOB?

We all work here and are telling you our honest opinion. If you have no other options and no one else will hire you like all of us then take it. It is a bull shit job run by mother fuckers and you will hate it. They pay is criminal and for pussys. Take it if you have no self worth and like making less than fast food. Dont worry it wont last long either way. That is what we keep telling ourselves. Thank God!

It is interesting how all threads eventually go to shit. I was hoping this one would stay positive just because it was such a refreshing change. Some people do make a low salary on contract, but I actually get paid pretty well because of previous experience, and I would take the job again. There are issues in pharma now days, whether you are contract or direct. Contract is not worse, except that there is no career path, but there is no stability being a direct hire either. The doctors don't know the difference and don't care. Nobody in BI has ever treated me badly because I am a contract rep either. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% what you do with it.

The "negative" poster was just presenting facts to the original questioner about working for in Ventiv. This job does suck--better than nothing? Yes. A good job? Definitely NO. Would I take it again? Yes I would because I had nothing else. Since taking it have I been searching every day for something better? Yes I have. This post, like the first "negative" post, is not derisive, hateful, or mean spirited. Simply statements of honest opinion about the negative experience of working for in Ventiv.
