Thoughts on Merck pension

if you are coming to cafepharma for investment advice then you must be perfect for an annuity. they mail you a check and dont ask you to understand a thing. so go back to momma merck and check off "annuity"

So I left mother in 2014. The pension calculator tells me my current balance is $21K. Had 16 years of service. Does this sound low? (Originally from SP). It’s so little, I’m thinking it’s best to just leave it until I’m at least 62. Thoughts?

I had same situation when I left. Every time you call you get a different quote on the account value. I was told 25k and cashed it out and a check for 50k showed up at my house? Not sure if Merck was lying to me about the value or just completely incompetent. Cash it out and roll it into something else.

Thanks for the interesting reply. I hope they make the same mistake on my case if I cash out! That would make my decision much easier
To the douche above: My family is taken care of far above the peanuts I’m talking about here. Zero debt, $$$ in an IRA, working spouse with a pension. I think we’ll be ok. I guess you’re still pissed Hilary lost.

Merck makes many "mistake" on such matters, but they always (somehow) catch them...When I was pushed out of the company and took my lump sum, they said they overpaid me around 25K and I had to pay it back...If you try not to pay it back, Merck will send you to collections and eventually sue you for not paying the money back.

By all means, take your money and run as fast as you can. I don't think Merck indexes for inflation, do they? If nothing else, spend $185 for the Bob Brinker investment letter and follow his advice by becoming your own money manager with his advice. It has served me incredibly well since 1990. Good luck!

Is there a statue of limitation when Merck can claim a "Mistaken Overpayment " can be recuperated? How long did it take for Merck to catch this "Mistake"? I can't believe this happens.

it was about 6 months before they caught their "mistake" and they happen ALL the time at
Merck...

some people never return the money, and just let themselves be chased and chased indefinitely, but
it is smart to just promptly pay back the overpayment...

You really don't want to f*(k with Merck when it comes to matters like this...they will knock off your head and
sH&t down you neck because it is a company comprised mainly of savage lawyers...

don't test their resolve...
