Hi All,

I will be finishing my BA next year and am considering being a pharma sales rep when I finish my degree. I have no prior sales experience, but I am in the pharma industry on the research end in pharmaceutical clinical trials. I work for a small site and will probably not be able to make a decent salary once I complete my degree. All of the positions that I would be eligible to move up to would require traveling 50-80% of my time (as overnight, air trips) which doesn't work well for me. Prior to research I worked in the medical field as an assistant for 8 years- even then I remember thinking pharma sales was something that I was interested in. I am looking for a position that allows home office, no overnight travel, and a good salary. I understand that commission is how reps make the bulk of the high income which I welcome, but is not necessarily what draws me in. I see a lot of negative things about pharma sales rep jobs posted on here but the reality is, that's how it is on the research end too and having worked with doctors for so long, I know the drill and how they play the game with reps. Does anyone have any advise for getting into sales or this side of the industry in general? What are the jobs that are available for "growth" after sales? Or is it just higher income at sales level? I'd appreciate any advise or input! Thank you!

I would advise running away as fast as you can. This is a dying job if you haven't already noticed by reading some threads. Managed care drives RX decisions and so many companies are switching to contracts, it isn't even funny. Good luck if you do decide to pursue it. Just don't make any long term plans for the future. It is too unstable here to do that.

Thank you for the input. Can you (or someone) explain the advantages/disadvantages to being in contract vs working directly for the pharma?
