The official "Grass is Greener" thread

Hey my old MJN family. I just wanted to say some things that I'm sure some of you aren't going to like, mainly those who are stuck with MJN (i.e. those riding out their pension reqs and have too much invested in the company).

First of all, I wish I was laid off when Catherine the Great decided to chop 20%. Anyhow, it's kind of long so here goes...

I was a proud sample carrying western region MJN employee until everything wrong happened with this company. Starting with BD leaving the west, and the introduction of the boring captain corporate as the new RBD. Next up would be the departure of DJ, followed by everyone else who made a positive impact in a place once called Heavensville.

Eventually the BMS parasites came in and stripped the spines out of every single worker in this company, and eventually took a dump on what this company once stood for. Now MJN has a VP who I swear is a surrogate of someone, and has voice mails that are scripted, not smooth and moral boosting like the awesome DJ used to give us. Not to mention the greatest RBD ever... BD. Both of those guys always sent a positive message, and it was almost daily. Best of all, it never sounded like the complete, and utter bullshit like you are fed today.

Also, after I have spoken with a few old colleagues around the MJN nation, it sounds like they have hired a few DBM's that aren't up to snuff as well. After my last conversation about the AOE changes, it really sounds like this company is going down the tube, and employee morale just keeps taking dings. Also, the talk about possibly a car allowance? Are you kidding?

I was so stripped of my morale, and dignity that I although I started with the all messaging and that MJN was the superior formula, I have left with the mentality that none of it matters, and it's coke/pepsi. Lets face it, it is what it is... MJN has never and will never do a head to head study because it's BS. Do levels matter? Really? Does more DHA really mean better development? Were the outcomes merely because the DHA parents were told that DHA makes your kid more advanced, and therefore spent more time reading, and interacting with their child? When you are on the outside looking in, and see sim babies, and MJN babies, and there is no difference, you start to think that it's all BS.

Let's face it, pedes hand mom a can of formula not because of whats in or on the can, but who hands them the can, and if they like that person.

Anyway, lets get to the point of the title... The official "Grass is Greener" thread... I have always been one to say that the grass isn't always greener, but I am gone from MJN, and the grass is green... very green. Can I work 20 hours a week and get away with it? No, absolutely not. Do I enjoy the 40+ that I'm putting in? Yes... Why? Because management is solid at my new company, and they recognize hard work, and reward their employees no matter if the company hits their $ or not. They don't move all the execs to a big office in Chicago, and then take a reward trip from their worker bees (the reps) who are the reason the company sells its product.

My direct report, is not a dip shit who leads with a do as I say, not as I do mentality. Our execs also know the business, and don't spit out nonsense in front of customers. Our leaders know how to motivate, and employees are happy here. Best of all, our benefits are less, about 100.00 per moth less, and no 75.00 per paycheck taken out for a company car either. They don't do trips for sales, but they don't hold an AOE carrot in front of your face and then patronize you at a national meeting either. They also have a solid direction, strong R&D, and don't try and sell their customers snake oil like staged formulas, and extra vitamin D. We don't have performance connections, just a review that identifies your opportunities, and focuses on your career path rather than if you are meeting expectations on something your RBD, and DM don't even have a clue about anyway.

Folks, all I'm saying is take a chance, leave MJN if the opportunity arises because there are better companies to work for. I have passed on a few great jobs because I was scared that I was so used to the MJN way. It may not have all the flex that MJN has, but for the amount of baggage that MJN brings with the flexible hours, MJN's not worth it. MJN is not going back to the way it used to be, it's only going to get more cutthroat, and less fun. Start looking, create a strong resume, put some reference letters together from your current customers, and go get the job you deserve. You would be surprised how many companies drool over people with hospital experience (not just device, or medical gear). Don't sell yourself short, you do alot more than regular pharma reps, and don't ever settle for being called a pharma rep either.

If any other EX MJN reps are lurking, let everyone know if you are grazing in greener pastures...

I am grazing in greener pastures as retired from MJN after 30 years with a great 401K, pension plan, social security and medicare. Life at MJ was great for many years and years ago we did had some good leaders (and some very bad, egotistical, drunk ones as well). Sorry that many of you who are young never got or never will get to experience it and can't retire with dignity and over a million dollars in your savings accounts. BMS (and at one time their stock in the '70's and '80's) was very, very good and put a lot of money in my pockets. The industry has changed and the times have changed but that is life...you just have to adapt.

Serious question, I want to be in a different pasture but I am wondering what pasture I should go to. Any suggestions?

If you look in particular at the formula industry, anyone with a half of a brain can see that it will be going 100% consumer eventually. That means that ANUS and MJ reps will be out of jobs. Not trying to scare anyone but just stating facts. Doctors don't really make formula decisions anymore, they tell the mothers to use the cheapest one as they are "all the same." There is really no loyalty to a particular Company. Why do you think that companies are advertising in magazines and in the media...marketing sees this as well. (By the way,, one of the reasons to move to Chicago was for the talent and advertising companies there) Then you have the WIC program that goes stricty by bidding without rep involvement.

OK, now that I said this, if you want to stay in the health care industry, look for something that has to do with services and products for older people. You have the "graying of America" with people living longer, baby boomers, etc. Try something like home health care or PT services. If you are lucky enough to go with a hip, knee, shoulder replacement device company, those reps make a lot of money. (BMS used to own Zimmer until they spun it off and it is a thriving company).
Good luck!

Where can you go? Sell the shit out of hospital selling experience on your resume. Sell the shit out of setting up Journal Clubs, Inservices, and giving presos. Do not sell the shit out of being somewhat a pharma rep... real sales hates pharma, and MJN looks kind of pharma. Go DME, capital, or specialty pharma... It's all about having a resume with good numbers, looking like a #winner, and selling yourself in an interview. You could have spent the last year selling dildos, but if you're good at it, people will want to hire you.

Lastly, throw as much shit at the wall and see what sticks... In other words, apply for every job you want because it will get you interview experience. Also lets face it MJN has hired some dumb asses for RBD's and DBM's, this should tell you right there that you don't always have to have experience for the job you apply for.

I'm sure you're living with dignity working as a greeter at Walmart while wearing depends, and telling stories that go on forever about the good ole days. Your grand children are bored of you, and so are we.

PS, park the car because your kind don't belong on the roads.
