The IRS goof-up and a public service announcement for those of you filing FAFSA

It would be nice if this administration could just handle what they are supposed to be doing.

This is totally ridiculous. If you itemize, you can't do your taxes until late February so the IRS can get it's act together. See, the government took so long to finally address the tax code changes and decisions weren't made until late December, so now we have to wait to file. I'm sure these pesky things just snuck up on them while they were busy taking over GM and health care and telling us how to eat.

This might not be a big deal for many but if you have kids in college, it can be. Most school based scholarships, even academic based ones, want a FAFSA filed first since any scholarship or aid beyond the cost of education is taxable so kids need to be informed before they accept the scholarship. Deadlines for filing for these scholarships for the following academic year are often before February 1. Keep in mind you can file an estimated FAFSA and then update it once you are able to file your actual return. For grants and loans, you should be OK as the deadline isn't until July 1.

If the government can't get this right, a system that has been in place for decades, how are they going to have the IRS manage health care reform enforcement?
