The Gig, is up

Pharma Sales as we know it, is over. During the State of the Union, Trump said “reducing the cost of prescription drugs, will be a 2018 focus”.

Then we got yesterday’s announcement by Amazon, JPMorgan Chase & Warren Buffett, teaming up to disrupt healthcare as we know it by making health insurance & the cost of prescription drugs more affordable.

It’s time to either be content being a Contract Rep, find a Sales job in another industry or attempt to leverage current experience into being the person who negotiates the cost of drugs with PBMs

Pharma’s greed did us in. This has been coming for a long time. We were able to buy/bribe Congress for a long time.Trump is draining the swamp of enough of the corrupt politicians to finally stop the once untouchable Pharma and it’s lobbyists.

It’s been a lucrative ride for many of us, and the party is over.

Don't panic people...always remember, the more things change - the more they stay the same, Pharma has huge margins (obscene actually) and have plenty of room to negotiate cuts with payors that will still leave phenomenal profits...Some back room nod nod wink wink deals will be cut, and pharma companies and their execs will get richer than ever...

And yes, there will still be virtual armies of drug reps out there...I remember hearing (on an annual basis) that it was over for drug reps dating back to 1990. And what do you know? There are still tons of reps being paid crazy money for working part time gigs...

Don't panic...The drug rep job is not meant to be forever any more...take the cash until you decide what you really want to do with your life, and if you do indeed, want a real job instead of a make-believe one.

The rep job is not a fake job. How else would all those fat obese nurses and office staff survive?

Like most things, there is a thread of truth in this post. I remember when I started in this industry the “old timers” made similar comments.
Organizations will always have some representation in the market. Merck is not going to just lock the door and walk away. I can’t tell you what that representation will look like however, I can tell you what it will not look like. You will never see a repeat of the POD selling model with 15 reps in a territory. Merck and Pfizer started that crap and fortunately it’s gone for good.
The industry is changing. Health care delivery is changing and all the supporting industries ( including ours) are being forced to evolve. Pharma recognized the huge profits to be made in developing drugs to treat chronic disease states in the 70’s and for 30 years we saw numerous products in this market and the birth of the reach and frequency model. It’s been a slow death as management wants to also save their own jobs. Those products are generic, third parties determine drug choices and the influence of the detail person is very limited. Merck is trying desperately to hang on hence our chronic care team. It won’t last. If that’s your plan for the future you deserve what will befall upon you.
Most companies reserve PC for contract groups and maintain a specialty force. AZ and BI are two of the last holdouts and that bomb will drop soon. Flag this post, I’m telling you now.

In 10 years there will be no Merck chronic care and the bloated management team will be begging for a telemarketing gig. The arrogant group of MBA’s we have hired to run marketing will be hard pressed to find something paying .50 on the dollar. Over the years these fools have squandered more money than any team in this company (remember java sync and all the other unmitigated failures they put together). I don’t care, I will retire next year. If your under 50 and not in Oncology then you are doing your family a disservice every day your not looking for an alternative. You will be clipped, flag the post.

Tomorrow I’m bringing some fried chicken to a group of pigs in PC clinic. I’ll have a good time, make up a call prior to and a couple post lunch and call it day. I’ll do that for the next year, collect 130K from mother then walk away with north of a million in pension and 401K. Not bad while it lasted.

"Virtual armies" of pharma reps? We've shed 90% of our sales reps since the 90's.

We do agree that a pharma "sales" position is a make-believe one.

No. This is so wrong!

Look I sort through my data and determine where impact can be made.
I heed the wisdom of my coach and persuasively articulate my marketing messages utilizing my iPad marketing material. My doctors absorb the compelling messages I provide and I shift prescribing habits. I put patients first and this is demonstrated to my physicians by my passionate messages and proper utilization of all of Merck’s resources.
I conduct RFM’s so I can effectively teach my physicians and their staff unique information regarding Januvia.
My numbers will rise as a result of my hard work and dedication to this company, my physicians and patients.
If all else fails, well I’m a hot blonde.

I've been looking around. The remaining Merck reps aren't much to look at.
