THE FATAL 3

1. Lilly stopped hiring Pharm D grads as sales reps - this was one of they key differences that made our sales force respected by the medical professionals in our community. Now we have a bunch of overpaid monkeys that can recite the science-without understanding it.
2. Lilly walked away from the insulin business when they had the marketshare. It was a stable business that continued to grow despite the lacknof marketing. That was just idiotic.
3. Lilly outsourced business that was the heart and sole of their business, along with much of their top
talent. You can't bring drugs to market by outsourcing your R and D to China and then brining it back in 3 years later. Same with functions that support submission activities. Marketing
, HR and sales should have been cut first.

I'd like to respond to your first point. We stopped hiring them for sales roles because they had zero interpersonal skills. Yes the physicians appreciated the science, but they wanted someone who could smile, say hello and tie their shoe. Does it really matter anyway? With the best and brightest we can't answer scientific questions anymore anyway!! The most we can say is, " I can get you a medical letter or refer you to Lilly on demand".

#2 can be blamed mostly on the lawyers who were afraid of being called a board game. Give away the business that's a really good solution.

Leadership bonuses the deincented capital investments also had a smaller hand in that one.
