The Daily Routine at Merck: Lies, Cheating, Fabricating, Spin

Welcome to the new Merck, where the formerly stellar "ethical" pharmaceutical company forces their sales reps to be liars on a daily basis, just to survive.

Wake up people!! You are selling yourself out for what? Propping up a failing industry with corrupt executives, and a "game" that is rigged against you.

Stop dumbing yourself down for the pharma rep job...It will catch up with you when you get older, and your DM decided he doesn't like u anymore...

This job causes corrosion of the soul....

It is not just sales, the infection has spread to every department in this cesspool of a company. There is not a single department that has overachieved throughout the whole company.

Time to look for new roads that lead to soul nourishment.....just show me the available jobs.

You'd be surprised at the world of jobs---with dignity---that are out there. Just get out of of the "I'm a drug rep" mindset. That's a failure in the making.

Now is the time to be job searching. Trust me on that.

If you can surprise me do it now because I am finding no jobs out there.

Quit and start your own company, take the entrepreneurial road. Don't wait for the job to come to you, build it yourself. At least that's what I did after many years putting up with the craps from incompetent senior managers in R&D. If you think it's bad in sales, come and take a look in R&D. They have been incompetent for the last 10 years and keep on putting out a stream of lies and craps to the board to cash in. Shareholders, please, clean up the mess, you need a new model for R&D, new leaders, new ideas... Your leaders in R&D sucks bad. Big mergers are not the solution, try innovations and excellence in business development instead.

Better yet try to get into a company that is owned by venture capitalists. The companies they buy are a lot smaller and you have more freedom to develop solutions. They give you a good number of shares with the understanding they want to take the company public in a few years. They have a OK pipeline of money and you get a big payoff at the end. There are a few that have startup companies in NJ. If things go well you move up quick.

Quit and start your own company? On what? Unless you have the money and income to pay for your regular bills while you make more even bills you are headed for one big finanacial nightmare. You comments sound like someone out of touch and living in a fantasy.

Yep you are right on. Play dumb and happy and managers keep you in a job. Robot of the week. Work with brains and see how fast its rigged against you ..You will be a history in the making.....

What a shame that so many of us will not be around when Merck turns the corner and goes from being a steaming pile of shit to a hugely successful juggernaut. And we all know that it takes actual human sacrifice to make that happen. Even when we are gone we will be able to take credit for the turn-around even if we did not experience it. Or not.

surely you jest...for starters, how about call reporting...no one can see the amount of doctors that you are "required" to see...give me a break...phony calls are standard...punch 'em in the laptop every night...

No see, can't detail but you are there. Half the calls some days. Big frustration for many of us.

PP: unfortunately its just not Merck - but the whole industry.

The pharma sales rep "job description" needs to change to what is realistic given the current medical environment we work in.

Its so obvious.....

What I can't understand is with all the MBAs, business analysts, etc. in this industry - why has been allowed to continue? If you think it through, it has let to all the crazy micromanaging that goes on.

Most reps want to work, they want to feel that they have accomplished something at the end of the day....the environment we work in does not allow that to happen.

Big changes need to happen - and soon.

But - probably won't.....

Big changes are about to happen, but not the kind of big changes you'd hoped for.

District rule is fired if found out. Not worth any risk...

Cant see doctor then its a call and no detail...

The rep's job has always been a game, more or less. Your companies know this and in the past tended to look the other way as long as sales were good. As the industry grew more competitive and your management began to panic, the shit began to roll down hill to the rep and looking the other way was not always practiced by some management. Who feels the pressure and takes the hit is anyone's guess at any given time. This has created an extremely uncomfortable pressured environment that reps contend with everyday. Nobody can be certain of anything in pharma sales now, least of all their own job. Reps are helpless in the end and must surrender to the whims of their management. It certainly isn't a job that offers a long term career plan anymore. The fortunate roll the dice and win to gain some questionable experience before getting the hell out to land a real job with real people doing real things that matter. Not the fake pretend make-believe stuff of big pharma.
