Surgical Associate vs Endoscopy Associate

If your goal is to become a Territory manager quickly, then surgical is the way to go. If you excel, you will have opportunities in all 4 divisions given the new management structure.

Agreed. Not to mention you'd be more exposed to the OR which would be better for career progression if you leave.

This should read '...better for career progression WHEN you leave.'

4 years at Olympus and I witnessed 3 of 55 original Surgical ASRs promoted. They are glorified procedure Fluffers with limited room for growth.

Steer clear. ORs are tightening accessibility to Sales and RepTrax, GPO/IDN control, ACA and Sunshine Reporting are going to kill this career avenue in two years.

Do you feel GI is any less susceptible to the above?

Susceptibility is mitigated by market share holding by Olympus GI. While they certainly believe they ate golden, they need to dedicate ET penetration and that is what the Endoscopy ASR will be used for.

GPO/IDN control, ACA and Sunshine will have some impact but not as much as in surgical. If Olympus can get a full service sales team in a facility of hospital system, they are pretty set with Capital equipment.

If I wanted to be tormented as an Olympus employee, Medical Endoscopy with Endotherapy would be a safer choice.

"Yeah. Healthcare sucks. Let's go back and sell xxxxxxxxx."

The significant difference between those years and what is to come is the legislated containment. From an economic standpoint you need to compare what is happening in healthcare from a market contraction standpoint similiar to the defense industry of 1980s, workers compensation insurance industry of early 1990s, dot com and energy sectors of mid-1990s, personal computer and software engineering sectors of early to mid 2000s, etc.

If anyone is looking for the double digit penetration percent increases and commissions commensurate to that level of growth, think again.

Just like natural laws, economic laws are stable. This is not opinion, it is a fact of economic law. Medical Device Sales will never be what they have been historically, ever again.

Does not mean it is not a sector where a decent salary can not be found. It will just have fewer folks in the President's club. ;)

Best of luck to all. Oh and remember the wild card here is the newly formed Sony Olympus Medical.

Ha Ha 2 weak companies=disaster. It's like watching a car accident. This company is not the place to make some serious money, it's just a stop on the train. There are better places to make a serious buck and get paid for your talent.

Have to be honest and say that every time I read the phrase "..and get paid for your talent." I cringe.

There are whole discussions and dialectic debates about talent vs work. In sales, talent is akin to acting. Those with a natural inclination to read people and situations and apply their personality and product knowledge excel. I have known many people try to be successful sales people but they fail due to their lack of 'talent'.

But the most bothersome element is most sales people apply a large amount of cognitive dissonance in their mind to believe their sales pitch. The best can sell oceanfront property in Arizona and have people lining up to buy it! For me, sales operations are approached from an analytical and pseudo-psychological standpoint because my personal truthfulness and moral ethics could never allow me to put money over human well being.

Before the flaming starts, consider the OBJECTIVE reason why you sell your products. If you would give up the $ and volunteer to sell your product because you believe in its beneficial application then you are a minority. Sad,.but true.

Now, go apply your talent toward meeting the second tier of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs because until you effectively separate $ from success, you will never hit the top of that pyramid.

Like every other Med device company. Ups and downs. Not much back office assistance. Home office is the mother ship to the alien workforce. Expect long hours and little upward mobility.
