Stock Holder Value

I am a retiree and I am looking at options to unload the rest of my Merck stocks.

I am looking at the stock price periodically in hopes that the stock will go up enough for me to exercise my options. Merck stock at this point isn't worth the paper it is written on. it used to be that reps were thrilled to be awarded stock options - now with the stock price so low and has been that way for a couple of years now - about the only thing it is good for now is lining the cat's little box.

Oops - meant litter box not little - but hey the price of Merck stock is "little" so maybe it does apply.

How solid is the pension if so much doubt on the stocks?

Get cut....should you take lump sum and invest independently. Maybe somebody's annuity, invest yourself in mix portfolio or maybe just leave it in with Mother?

Anyone have some good ideas....safety in mind!!!!!

Merck almost cannot go below 30 but its maximum up-side potential over the next 2 years is certainly well less than 40. It pays a dividend so it is a good enough place to leave your money for now. If the good cholesterol drug is the first or best in class it has good up-side potential, especially since it still has a strong C-V franchise to work from. Unfortunately, as you all must realize by now, Merck can't seem to excel at much these days. It is mired in mediocrity but is also too big to fail (rapidly). So if it fails it will fail slowly. If you are happy to have a dividend without a lot of growth oppportunity, stay in Merck. Once the market starts to turn around, Merck will not be the place to be. Merck is a more secure investment than it a secure employment possibility, that's for sure.

So if it fails it will fail slowly.

It is failing slowly (and surely) right now, as it has been since about the fall of 2004.
I am so very glad to be out from under Mother's ever-watchful, and ever-critical eye. She did not used to be like this. There was a time when she really, truly, nutured her offspring and wanted them to succeed.

I believe she has become a crack addict and is now selling her children for her next fix (the fix being the continued - and increasingly unmerited - compensation at the Executive Ranks).

A sorry tale of a once-respected company that lost touch with its customers, its employees and definitely its ideals.
