Sparks from tips of Single Site cannula

Davinci CSR's are so funny...They know so much about how to scrub schedules and post phantom cases, but they know absolutely nothing about electrosurgery. I've personally seen many cases of electrosurgical mishaps, and when asking CSR in the room...they deny it ever happened because they were playing with their Iphone while simultaneously saying "good job doc" every 30 seconds.

I find this interesting because capacitive coupling is pretty much a non-issue in modern laparoscopy, SILS included. Aside from possibly using more cautery with robotics, what would cause this?

It became a non-issue when everyone started to use plastic cannulas. SILS also uses plastic cannulas. I'm only aware of Intuitive using metal ones.

Then why use metal cannulas? Seems like an easy fix for something that is causing so many problems for ISI right now (alternate site injury lawsuits, etc.). Will an EES or COV cannula not work?

The robot uses a Hall sensor to detect the cannulae. Therefore they need to be made of metal.

Perhaps they can start using RF sensors?

I overheard the metal ring that isn't covered by the tip cover on the MCS was getting hot from capacitive coupling and they did a 'manufacturing improvement' last year to fix that.

Comical and dangerous all at same time. Naive ISI reps unaware of the danger and their idiotic third rate surgeons that don't do enough laparoscopy to understand the pitfalls of metal cannulaes and electro-cautery principles.

You guys really need to train these morons better than this (and I'm talking about surgeons and reps). No one wonder people want to sue your ass. Stupid is as stupid does.
