Software fix for a cyber threat that never existed

What problems are being seen? We performed download on numerous patients in our clinic this week w/o problems. I re-read our paperwork and it does clearly explain a .003% potential for loss of function during the download. Isn't that a possibility during any type of firmware download? Had a hiccup on a couple of MDT re-devices during a firmware re-boot a few years ago.

I browse this site for industry happenings that might shed light on issues going around.

Of course there will be a lot of mud slinging over this but this seems to be a positive step by Abbott. Muddy Waters ran them through the ringer over the Cyber hacking issue but let's face it, no company.... and no not even big blue is 100% safe from being hacked IF the right person, with the right equipment and the mind to do so - any device is vulnerable to a 'hack'. Your'e naive to say any company is immune to it. So, Abbott decided to something. IF they didn't and IF even one device was ever hacked BOOM... lawsuit on top of lawsuits. Now that they did this and people will criticize and ridicule.

That facts are this... It's not a recall. The new firmware is not required.... not by the FDA or Abbott. Is there a risk to downloading the firmware? Of course there is. You can never make a blanket statement and say that there is 0.0000% chance of anything ever going wrong during a complete download of a firmware package. That being said, some physicians will say download into everyone. Some will say, nope leave it alone and others will address it on patient by patient basis based on each patient's comfort and concern over a potential of an outside hack which is very unlikely. I'm gonna guess that the other manufacturers will follow suit at some point with their own version of software to prevent hacking.

> It's NOT a recall.
> The FDA is NOT requiring the firmware to be loaded nor is Abbott. It's a patient by patient consideration.
> So far, there has been 0.000% devices 'hacked' so why risk the 0.003% chance of malfunction during download?
> Abbott (SJM) were/is in a pickle over this... If they did nothing it would have resulted in major scrutiny... they don't care, they did nothing, etc. So, they did something pro-active which results in... See, they're hiding something... their devices are being hacked, etc. Pretty much hosed either way.
> If you saw/read some of the news articles... VERY misleading.
> To say that any company's devices are 100% immune to being hacked is simply false.
> The previous poster is likely correct in that other companies will be following suit in some fashion with their own Cybersecurity prevention.

sounds like a bunch of stj rhetoric on this board so far. Still trying to downplay that you covered up and are still covering systemic faults in all areas of developing your products. The truly informed not using your products and your low low prices to those that do (because they put cost over patient care) are responsible for your horrific crm performance. This is the beginning of the end for you, my friend. Good riddance. Anyone implanted with a st jude device in the last three years reading this, ask your doctor why they didn't implant another companies product. You will be sick.

True Dat! Someone, please post the FDA warning letter they received. You know, the one that also talks about the battery issue and the FACT that five recalled devices were ACTUALLY IMPLANTED after the recall. That way, the truth will be on this board, rather than the BS STJ has posted in these threads. And if I am incorrect, STj people, you post the FDA letter, so the facts will be on the board. Thanks.

st jude icds are consistent. Every unit over the past 5 years have been part of a serious advisory. Think of that batteries shorting, capacitors shorting, a Chief operating officer in charge of it all ran the ship right into the pier, the the dumb ass board decided to make him CEO. His most famous move of 2017 getting a deserved letter from the FDA. MR does what MR does ask intermedics. He runs the ship right into land consistently. We in the field have been cleaning up after that clown and continue now that he is gone. Shit I miss rate smoothing thanks MR, at least I got cases back then now I don't have a MRI icd. That was hard to see as a need for the past 20 years... boom there's land again. MR the gift that keeps on giving

Could Someone post a link to or post a copy of the FDA warning letter? Thanks.

Of course nobody is hacking into Uncle Bob's pacer. But STJ lied about being vulnerable. The company lied about it. They are liars. FACT.

Prove that to be inaccurate and you win.

I am out of CRM and actually enjoying my life now but I like to come back and browse the chaos that I left behind. Personally, I was never a fan of the old SJM regime. They did not handle some things well. Neither did MDT (Fidellis initially) and BSX. We can always look back and critique how someone handles something. But this.... No matter what, SJM (now Abbott) can't win. People blast them for doing nothing and then the same people blast them for doing something.

SJM was dragged through the mud by Muddy Waters over the Cyber hacking issue. A lot of tweeters out there were very vocal with negative messages toward SJM over it too. It was proven that SJM devices 'could' be vulnerable to Cyber attacks. It has also been proven that NO company is immune to the possibility of a Cyber attack. Wall street hammered SJM over all of this. Now, Abbott steers the ship. They decided to be proactive and people are hammering them. If they didn't do anything.... 'Oh.... same old same old... Sticking their heads in the sand.' I'm going to guess that every CRM company will address the potential for Cyber hacking in some way.

Don't miss the hypocritical games at all.

Whatever, you stj troll. Post a link to the warning letter and let people decide themselves.

Reasonable post above...

ABT seems to be trying to do a positive thing. Problem is they have a lot of work to do to remove the old SJM stink AND there are docs out there that will never listen or hear the message - just go look at Twitter. A lot of blowhards out there.

I actually watched an ABT rep attempt to deliver a factual message to a doc and staff only to have a competitive rep sling mud all over him 2 minutes after. I was impressed with how the doc actually asked the rep to 'back down' as he pointed out that most likely every company be doing something similar at some point.

Every single CRM company has been dealt black eyes. It takes time to heal those wounds and only time will tell. Is ABT going to be patient with their field force to work through this with the weakest bag in the industry right now???

no it is all about the math. Abbott doesn't care about reps and clinicals look at CV. Does the present leadership know how to turn around a failing set of franchises.... nope. I am going to keep on delivering the pain.

Troll. No, the doctor said stj is in a lot of trouble. Said will be a long time before he has faith in stj again, if ever.
