MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Complication rates for women with endometrial cancer were roughly the same after standard laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery, although the robotic procedures each cost about $1,300 more, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The meta-analysis looked at data covering nearly 2,500 hysterectomies performed to treat endometrial cancer. About 60% of the women had robotic surgeries; the remainder had laparoscopic procedures. Among the latter, the complication rate was 9.8%, compared with 8.1% for the robot-assisted cohort – a difference study co-author Dr. Jason Wright said disappeared when factors such as race, insurance status and hospital location were taken into account.

"The bottom line is that there is really no difference in the complication rate between robotic and laparoscopic surgery, but robotic is much more expensive," Wright told Reuters Health.

Robotic operations tracked in the study cost about $10,600 on average, compared with $9,000 or so for laparoscopic surgery. Other factors pare the difference to about $1,300 per procedure, according to the news service.

But how easy is it to perform complex laparoscopic surgery? Did the study ask how the surgeon felt going home after a long day of performing laparoscopic surgery on obese patients??

I'm sure all the docs will come rushing back to North Haven now...

This was the worst put together study I have ever seen. Trust me, Intuitive reps aren't going anywhere. We're hiring more reps this year and grew 27% last year.

Re: So long Intutive Sales Reps...the report is out. You cost more w/o better outcom

yes they are. They will cut your territories and expect growth or else you are gone . So your income is dependent on growth in new docs doing more procedures and hitting your buckets. what ya gonna do when you hit the wall Not worth the stress you have to deal with .

Re: So long Intutive Sales Reps...the report is out. You cost more w/o better outcom

They expect you to grow your territory, train docs and increase procedures?? How dare they? Someone should report them for asking you to actually do your job. I think you should go work for a company that looks the other way when you suck at your job.

Re: So long Intutive Sales Reps...the report is out. You cost more w/o better outcom

So are you saying Intuitive doesn't have the highest turnover rate in the industry?

Most companies think growing you business qtr over qrt year over year, by a significant amount is a job well done.

Not at ISRG. Truth is most people that work here leave or get fired in less than 2 years.

why is that?

you go work your accounts like ISRG wants you to tomorrow, I'll go and find a job with a better quality of life and great comp.

Assuming that is a serious question. The capital manager is front line capital sales, they do not manage people. If you are asking about ASM taking a clinical sales role it could be for any number of reasons.

Please elaborate

Re: So long Intutive Sales Reps...the report is out. You cost more w/o better outcom

This study was roundly canned by all surgeons who took 2 seconds to really read it. It compared surgeons who have done 100's of surgeries via tradional lap techniques, with those that had performed only a few robotic cases. It didnt take into consideration the learning curve. When you look at the data and compare Apples to Apples, a robotic surgeon that has done 100 cases has outcomes that conclusively crush the standard lap techniques. There is no contest. That's why you see no more posts on this. This study was stupid and quickly exposed as biased. You would not see ISRG stock at over $500 a share if there were any credibility to this whatsoever.
