Abbitt have and make medical device and drugs.
Amgen have and make drugs.
Split of nothing.
New abbitt drug co. and amgen drug co. now same hooker on street corner.
No. Abbott Pharma will be leaner and more agile in the marketplace than the behemoth it is now. Previously, Abbott needed to protect its larger business in devices by not taking too many risks on the pharma side. That's over. Gonzalez will be the new pharma CEO and he's been at Abbott for about 30 years. IOW, he knows all the tricks from the past and is deeply rooted in a Chicago-style business culture. This split will allow them to be more aggressive in a tightening market.
Amgen has lost any culture it may have had by bringing in a hodge-podge of outside management. There is no single/sustained way of approaching business. Add to that, the fact that Amgen is based in the vastly more progressive state of southern California and you get a politically-correct focus. Human Resources now makes all the hiring decisions based more on diversity than ability. The old guard could care less 'cause they've made theirs on the easy-street of no competition for 25 years. Also, the Law Department makes all the marketing decisions, is far too quick to say no, and generally could care less what sales does as long as they appease the regulators in an insanely anti-business regional environment. Abbott is a huge part of the Chicago elite and we all know you don't jump to investigate your friends. Currently the power is from Chicago and you can bet Abbott hedged its bets to take advantage of it.
Read the news releases on this story and you'll see nothing but glowing reports on the tremendous success of Humira. This is going to suck all the air out of the room for Amgen sales people wanting to show the latest-greatest, law-dept-vetted, watered-down detail piece about a 14 year-old (or so) biologic. The big news is how Abbott is spinning off a new company based solely on their success with Humira. Are you still using Enbrel?
