Skirts

I was at the Mall last weekend walking behind several girls (teens) no older than 15 -16. Two of them had skirts soooo short and tight with heels on. One kept pulling down on the skirt because it was crawling up her butt to the point of noticing what was underneath. Of course, the entire group is laughing about this.

Everyone walking around me (behind them) was making snide remarks. They looked like hoochies.

Is it me? Why are these young girls allowed to walk out of their homes loooking like trash? Do they honestly look in the mirror and think they look classy or normal? These poor kids are growing up thinking that their self-worth is in the eyes of people gawking at them! Sad.

Oh, I don't know. I know that as soon as I turned 16 and had a job, my out of school and off work wardrobe consisted of very short shorts, halter tops, and t-strap sandals. Of course it was the 70s, but every generation gets their own style of goofy clothes.

SPN...these skirts were not just short skirts...they looked like hookers...tight-knit wrapped skirts so tight that the girls couldn't sit I'm sure. Totally inappropriate. I remember halter tops as well...long ago!

There is a difference between looking good and looking trashy. Judging from the comments around them...they looked the latter.

My skirts were never longer than the tip of my third finger -- if I put my arms straight down on my sides and the skirt was below my third finger tip -- I did not wear it.

It's amazing to think about some of the really short dresses and skirts that girls wore when we were kids, but it was a much more innocent time. Kids had not been sexualized nearly to the extent they have been today and porn had not been mainstreamed to the extent it has been today. In other words, the culture wasn't a sewer.

I never let my daughters dress that way and they never will, certainly not when they are dependent on daddy in any way. They won't do it later either, they've got good enough sense not to, but they certainly wouldn't do it now. Girls and young women can dress fashionably without looking like they've been shopping at Prostitots or Teenage Streetwalkers R US!

Well, I have 2 teenage girls- so I am dealing with this now. It is very hard when almost all the high school girls dress the same. I look around their campus, and I have to say it is rare I would see a girl NOT wearing something very short. I hate it too- but it is the style now- you cant walk into a store and find something conservative. The worst part is not as much seeing the teens dress this way- but seeing their middle aged mother's dress this way-- now that is revolting!!!

I also have to pick my battles, as raising teens today is soo different from when we were teens, the world has really changed. Unless you go live under a rock somewhere.

Agree about the good sense part. Thinking that way takes independence and high self-esteem. My girls aren't teens anymore but they never dressed that way. They are at an age where they no longer shop in the tween-teen stores. Forever 21 should be banned...
They used to come home from HS with stories about the girls they saw in the hallways dressing with skirts one inch below their ass. Guys would call these girls derogotory names and the girls 'accepted' it.

I've mentioned some things about their dress before (cleavage) but overall they dress not to impress, but for themselves. Luckily I'm out of that crazy period. Teen years are tough but these kids need a sense of standard for themselves.

The skirts I saw on those girls looked like tube skirts (girdle-like). I'd lock the door before I had a daughter walk out like that.

They honestly think they look good going out like that. And what boggles my mind is that there are men who like to see women look like that.

Some people live vicariously through their children, those same people will have some serious emotional problems when Susie leaves the next.

We're in a pretty conservative area and schools still enforce a dress code and trends or brands are just not a big deal. You see a little of everything in the malls though, from the hooker looks to nun wanna bes. In both cases, you have to wonder where the parents are. I've taken kids aside that are friends of my kids and advised them at times, about what looks young and spirited and what looks slutty, how much makeup is attractive and how much is too much. I'm no fashion icon but find they do listen if it is approached the right way. With one, I used to start with, 'you're such a pretty girl and it's great you're learning how to use make-up. But you have fair features and light eyes and putting on that much mascara takes away from your gorgeous eyes! Use a little for accent, not so much some one across a room can tell.' I've also made some change before they go out to dinner or movies with us, but that only takes once and they learn what is expected. No bra straps showing, no bare midriffs, no sweats or pjs, no holes in jeans or shirts. You can be conservative without banning everything fun and youthful that a kid of 15-20 should be enjoying! So Scarlett, I wasn't there and it sounds like they were over the top, but I also see far too many parents go to the other extreme and complain about girls in their late teens wearing minis or shorts even when they are tasteful due to parental fears and a desire to cover them in a blanket until they are 30.

Yeah Phoebe, I agree the older ladies dressing to young and with no body awareness are far worse!

Phoebe - that story is sadly true. Why do people dress inappropriately? LACK OF SELF-AWARENESS!

In some cases, it is cultural also. Have you ever watched that show on cable where they take someone who dresses like trash and re-wardrobe them while providing a makeover? They go from trash to class. The name escapes me this AM. I love it. It's tough to tell someone you are not close to that they need to be conscious of what is appropriate or not.

When I was 19 on vacation with my buds, I once went to a grocery store and bought a huge cucumber and stuffed it in my swimming shorts. The double takes from the women (and men) were hilarious.
