Should I leave for 35k bump in salary

Guess it depends on a lot of things, right?

How happy or unhappy are you at Merck right now?

How does working here affect your physical and mental health?

How is your relationship with your boss? Are they chill? Annoying?

How likely do you think it is you’re going to get laid off? Are you trying to get them to lay you off? Could it backfire if you get terminated for cause? How are your performance reviews?

Is 35k a significant amount of money to you? It really depends on the percentage increase probably moreso than the flat number. To someone making 70k it’s a life changing amount. To someone making 200k it’s not that big a deal.

Do you have RSUs? How does that factor into you getting laid off vs leaving?

Overall, you’re weighing a definite 35k vs the shadow of something that might happen.

Good advice, thank you! Percent increase 33 percent to be exact. I am under paid because I have been with the company for so long, haven’t had significant increases.
No rsu to speak of. manager is pretty good.

Aside from analyzing your experience here, I’d also try to get some honest intel about the company you would hop to.

are their drugs any good?
Whats the culture like?
Layoff frequency?
Are people happy or miserable there?
Is there room to grow in the organization?
Is the company on a good path or are there signs it’s heading toward a disaster?
Are the DSMs off their rocker and will give you hell?

I’d try my best to make a connection with someone at the company asap. Maybe through mutual relationship with someone you know in the industry!

33 percent, shit dude, take the money and run that’s a no brainer. No maybe severance is worth turning that down.

I would add what therapeutic area does it land you in? In pharma today's "if it ids to be it's up to me", the broader your experience the better. If the new job is in a disease stae with pricing power (onc, Neuro, infused therapies, orphan etc.) it should make it that much more enticing to jump.
