Self-Reflecting Article
Being a leader takes hard work, dedication, and focus. To become a successful leader, you must take a look at oneself to see what you may be doing wrong if things are falling apart within your company, or what things may need to be taken to higher levels if things are going well for your company. This article will be a self-reflection of who I feel I am as a leader, my leadership purpose, how I can remain authentic as a leader, and what insights I took from this course and what strategies I may need to work on to become the leader I wish to be.
Who am I as a Leader?
I am an authentic leader by leading by example, I know what my purpose is, I take pride in my work and the people I work with, I build strong work relationships with my colleagues and staff, and I use systems thinking to resolve arising issues within my team. Being an authentic leader means that you are not just focused on yourself, but the people around you, you want them to succeed the same way you have. For you to become an authentic leader you cannot be a selfish leader, but one that shows your passion for what you are doing and showing you have compassion for the people working beside you. Gaining trust and being open about your ideas and opinions will help the people working with you to feel the same and that builds strong relationships, so the people you work with will have better communication and will feel comfortable engaging within the team.
What is my Leadership Purpose?
The purpose of my leadership role is to push myself as hard as I can, and as I am pushing myself, I can push others to be their best. I also want to create things that work for the company longevity and not just for a moment. Not for one moment do I want to start to feel arrogant and too good about the position that I am working. I would want to spend a lot of time with the people that I am working with to show them that I too am a part of the team and I am not just looking for them to do everything, but we all assist each other while making proper changes that are good and string for the company. If I were not active in projects and rarely spoke with my team that would defeat my leadership purpose because I feel that as a leader your team should see your greatness and want to follow.
How can I Remain Authentic?
I will remain an authentic leader by staying to true to myself and my purpose. If I show that I am understanding, practicing solid values, leading with heart, establishing connected relationships, and demonstrating self-discipline, I will remain a truly authentic leader (George, 2016). Using systems thinking as a way to overcome and resolve issues within my teams and making the proper decisions that are needed for the betterment of the company keeps me authentic. Listening to my team and making sure that I take their ideas and opinions into consideration will help to build better relationships with them and gain their trust. I will lead by example by showing my team that I am here to make things better and with their help, we can become a good to great company.
What Insights to take? What Strategies to work on?
One main insight that I took from this course is systems thinking. Systems thinking is not just something that we use at work, but in everyday life. Sometimes we tend to have an issue is only see the negatives and quickly get stressed or upset, instead of taking some steps back and looking at how the issue can go away if we analyze it a little more and come to a decision on how to handle it right then and there. If we prolong it then it becomes an ongoing issue that can only get worse, start asking questions and get deeper into the issue this can help to resolve it (Goodman, 2018).
Some strategies to work on would be overthinking the whole leadership role. I think that overthinking can become an issue because you are constantly thinking of making a mistake or doing something wrong and this would not be something an authentic leader should have.
Conclusion
In conclusion, being an authentic leader can be something that is natural, but for those who have to work at it, it starts with looking at yourself and staying passionate about what you want to do. It can be so easy to get off track into things that you have no passion for, stay focused, know that it is not all about you and be open about what you want and expect this will keep you as an authentic leader.
