Big Pharma, back to big spending.

On December 2, 2010 more than 1700 US employees were laid off from Sanofi-Aventis. The reason for their lay-off according to senior executives within Sanofi-Aventis, was a result of dramatic decrease of sales and not attaining forecast goals. Fast-Forward 2 months and Big Pharma is back to Big Spending.

Sanofi-Aventis, makers of Lantus and Apidra, will hold a week long National Sales Meeting (Feb 8-11) in Las Vegas, NV with more than 2300 employees in attendance. Company officials did not respond to our inquiry about the expenses involved in a national meeting so soon after laying off more than 1700 us employees.

Wah wah, it is all because of the FDA and the DOJ and "Reform" - so say the executives.

However, other companies are doing just fine. Lilly and Sanofi have to "man up" and not attempt to rely on throwing money at problems, like expensive national meetings, or six-figure salaries to six-sigma program "champions" - this is all very high-school-prom-ish, without the sex. Well may be so...

Wait, Wait, Wait.........all 2300 or so are devicing a strategy to buy Genzyme at @ 78/sh (~21B), and then how to lay off the employees from Genzyme. umm...like Lilly did to Imclone, Roche is doing to Genentech, and Pfizer did to upjohn.

Pfizer is about to do the same to King. If you want anything stronger than aspirin or tylenol (+hydrocodone), look no further.
