Sales to Marketing

Yes but as with any industry, many people in sales don't have the professional expertise or training to be marketers so they often don't go far. Sometimes it's because they don't have the skills but often it's because they don't like the job. Corporate politics can be a beast and guys who are used to running their own show and making things happen can get very frustrated when they run into the corporate political machine and realize how hard it is to get anything done. Many then just go back to sales. If you are interested and don't have a marketing background or an MBA with a focus on marketing, I'd consider going back to school. If you have the industry knowledge that's a big plus but you still can't be a true marketer if you don't have the training. Sort of like how a vet tech may know a lot about veterinary medicine and a good one could probably put on a white lab coat and convince people that she is a vet, but if she really wants to be a vet, she needs to go to school to be one. Only difference with marketing is that if you can get someone to give you a break at the entry level, you will be much better prepared than even someone with an MBA. Too often people straight out of grad school get hired into a good level job with only maybe internship experience and they are out of their leagues. Scary stuff.

Good luck!

You can go from an outside sales representative to marketing...of course you take a pay cut, your handcuffed to a desk all day, you dont get your company vehicle anymore, and your stuck in a 6 by 6 cubicle. I think I'd rather deal with GPS units.

yup, can be done but why? I'm a rep and can make it to all of my kid's games and what not. I've worked on projects in the home office and those marketing people are there on weekends, sometimes until 9 or 10 PM and have to deal with the corporate BS. If your a good rep you can make more $$$$$$ than they can with your commission and actually have a life. They definately make more than an average rep but not more than top tier rep. Why would you want to do that? Yeah, it might be a good career move but who the hell cares when I got a life, a good income, and a company car? The people in corporate can have that BS. I ain't havin it.

I second that! What are your thoughts on being a DM?

I have passed up DM twice. There is no way I want to be responsible for others that are given the motivation I have been. This is great but I would I know the temptations and the rewards first hand . chill. take the obama care
